If you have read other parts of this website, you may have noticed the large amount material associated with this game. There is a good reason for this... It is one of my favorite games of all time! It rates in my top 10 favorite video games and is my favorte RPG.
This game was released in early August of 2000, for the Playstation. I first tried this game in late August, and my friend who I borrowed it from did not get his game back until October.
My favorite aspect of this game is its storyline. It's plot revolves around a "silent protagonist", as the game calls him. He is 'you', but unlike other games, he follows other people (and their plots) and is found to be linked into all of the plot, but only later on. The suprising nature of the plot is also an interesting point. The objective switches about 4 times during the game.

The movies are extremely cool looking. The realism is extraordinary (hair ripples in them), which probably is because they had help from Pixar, and that this game is made by Squaresoft, which is currently making the Final Fantasty movie(completely CG). The only game so far to surpass these great movies is FF9 (Final Fantasty 9), but this is not a very fair comparison, considering that it is made by the same company (Square) and came out 4 months later.
The music and sound effects are also very good. The music is good enough for me to make a CD, and the SFX is good except for the annoying loudness of 5 pairs of feet stomping down a hallway.
The battling engine is another very cool part of the game. The graphics are only decent for Playstation, but the flow and mechanics of the battle are very unusual. It takes only a short time to learn how to fight in the game, but is incredibly difficult to master. The greatest change is the usage of magical attacks. You buy 'elements' and equip them (much like FF7), but instead of MP (magic power) you use energy gained during the battle. For every physical attack on the enemy, you gain so many element points. You then spend these points to use your magic.
This is the map of the Main island in the game. The three huts and the dock is your hometown, Arni.![]()
I can only think of two problems with this game. One is minor: names have a limit of 6 letters. The major one is that game ends with some loose-ends and incredible amount of suspense for a possible sequel. With no officially announced sequel, fans (including me) are waiting patiently for a PS2 release.
I would rate this game a 9 out of 10. You should at least rent this, even if you don't like RPG's.
