Well it has been a while since I've done anything on the car. Having attended BVF this year I felt more motivated and wanted to get on with it now I at last have a welder. So today I rolled the car out and tried to fit the two remaining bolts in the floorpan to heater channel right at the front but the old bolts were so chewed up they wouldn't screw in. I then removed one from the otherside - ie it took 30mins! but I couldn't get that to fit either. I then phoned a couple of places to get some replacement bolts only to find my local VW dealer was cheapest and had 3 in stock so a quick trip on the bike to get them later and I was ready to fit them.
After an hour of fiddling and getting rust in my eyes I managed to get the bolts in. I then began welding the 1/4 panel in place onto the heater channel. It took some gratuitous hammering and bending to mate up properly but it is well and truly in now. Just got the seams to grind down.
Whilst I was working on the car this guy in a van pulls up and said he had seen me working on the car and wondered if a copy of John Muir's bible was any use to me - it was a reprint from 1979 - He gave it me free. It was nice of him but he did say beetles were the worst car he had ever worked on!
Here's to more work over the next few days.
