| 01-30-1995: A little 16 year old boy steps into the four walls of one of the premium institutes of education of the country. Decked in my gleaming white shirt and khaki pants, I off load my extremely heavy trunk and chop box and slowly walk into my assigned hall: Lockhart Schweitzer..from here forth known as Loko Schwaa. I was full of excitement, full of fear, full of desperation as the horror stories of "boarding school" flashed back and forth in my mind. It did not take very long for my first "homo-ing"(bullying) encounter to transpire: I was dished a handful of "so's"(slaps on the back of the hand) and made to open my trunk and chop box for inspection....the darkness began to creep and then came the NIGHT!!!..... As day turned to night and night turned to day, life in Kwabotwe turned out to be more than i had bargained for...I was in class with 30 other extremely bright kids, i was showering with 10 other strangers i knew from nowhere and the "ablu" cleaning experience. I washed clothes for seniors, fed others and still got beat up by most...days turned into week and weeks into months and by the end of three months and about 30 ppounds lighter school was out and I was ready to go home.... Ironically, the culmination of the semster brought tears to my eyes as friends like Rasgege, Ranking , Bishop and Abeguss who I had gotten to know through the struggles of "the first-year experience" also packed their bags and left for home. Before i could say Jack break was over and school was in session again. That was probably one of the greatest days in my life...meeting all ma friends again and talking about our holidays and how much we had missed the same place we thought was a "torture chamber"..... The semesters rolled by during which time 15 of us got closer and closer...in out final year we formed THE INFAMOUS FLAVA COURT, the most visited room on the entire campus...we had every luxury you could think about in a Ghanaian high school.....a stereo, a cooker, a fan and a host of other illegal contraptions brought to school by members of FLAVA COURT....Almighty Jakpa was inducted as the 16th member of FLAVA COURT after he escaped the dreary life on Balmer Acquah and joined the "land of milk and honey" . . . . 12-08-1997: After three years in Kwabotwe, three hard years in the grip, confines and harnesses of Coroo, Hopeman, Dr. Dre and BlanksonMan, I was finally done and ready to step out into the world, i knew perfectly nothing about...The stories of my life in Kwabotwe could go on for hours, but the moral to each and everyone of them is that the "boarding school" experience is one of the greatest experiences one can have and I will forever cherish the school and the people who made me what I am today..... Shouts out to ma all peeps who were in our rival high schools: St. Augustines, Adisco (Y'all Know We're the Best and The Ladies Know Too!!!). Final shout outs to the chicks of Wey Gey Hey and HolyCo : y'all keep your shine on and stay f-i-n-e. |
