A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced one of the most popular horror movie villains of all time; the one and only Freddy Kruger. Created by writer/director Wes Craven Freddy was the perfect inescapable killer. Since he attacked you in your dreams there was no way that you could simply stay away from him no matter how hard you try you will eventually fall asleep.
After A Nightmare on Elm Street became a surprise hit in 1984 new line cinema quickly began work on a sequel. In total the 7 Freddy movies have brought in several hundred million dollars in box office and tie in merchandising. New Line Cinema is sometimes called "the house that Freddy Kruger built."
