Two days after the events in part 2 a group of kids go to a family's summer home, which is located on Crystal Lake. Chris, the girl who's parents own the place, had been attacked there 2 years ago by what is later discovered to be Jason. Two of the kids piss off a biker gang. When the bikers come to take some revenge they are butchered by Jason, who proceeds to do the same to the kids. Chris is left as the only one alive, after appearing to kill Jason she has a dream about being attacked by Mrs. Voorhees in the lake.

MYTHOS INFORMATION:

  • Takes place in 1980, two days after the events from part 2

  • Jason takes a hockey mask from prankster Shelly (Larry Zerner) and likes it so much that he keeps the hockey mask look for all of the remaining movies.

  • Chris (Dana Kimmell) seems to have lost her mind and is presumably taken to a mental institution. She is never seen in the series again.

    STORY:

After part II made some major cash at the box office Paramount decided to make another one, but to spice it up with a new gimmick shooting in 3D. They shot with Arriflex cameras using a process called ArriVision 3D in an aspect ratio of 2.35x1 (the one and only time that a Jason was not filmed in spherical 1.85x1). Part IIs director Steve Miner was back in the director's chair. Paramount's president's son Frank Mancuso Jr., who had been an associate producer on part II, was promoted to Producer.

As before Paramount made the movie on the cheap, $4 million, with a money saving non-union crew. As before no-name actors were cast in the main parts. The movie was shot in California. Composer Henry Manfredini was busy with another job and could not score the entire film. Manfredini wrote music for the last reel of the movie and tracks from Parts I & II was used in the rest of the movie. The movie was released (Friday) August 13, 1982 with great hype surrounding it; most young people had never seen a theatrical movie in 3D. It outgrossed part II by about $15 million. It began a short lived 3D horror movie fad that lead to several 3D horror movies being made in the early 80s.

    TRIVIA:

  • This film was originally shot in 3D and called Friday the 13th Part III: 3D. The video was never made available in 3D; so all of the camera angles that looked cool in 3D look funny to anyone who doesn't know it was originally 3D.

  • Dana Kimmell, who played Chris, did not like all of the gore and sex in this movie. She reportedly tried to get producer Frank Mancuso Jr. to edit some of it out. It is clear that little or no gore was removed. Her reservations help explain something about the sex. It explains why Shelly said that the kids went skinny dipping but we never see them doing it; and why there is both a sex and shower scene with almost no nudity.

  • Jason is played by Richard Brooker, who is 6'3" and answered the casting call which basicly just asked for a big man.

  • Excluding the scenes from Part II no characters in this movie actually says the name Jason; this is the only film in the series in which this happens.

  • Grossed $36.2 million domestically.

  • 3D movies have an effect called going past the lens, which is what it is called when an object seems to jump out of the screen, regardless of where a viewer is in the theater the object seems to be in right infront of their face. The following past-the-lens effects were in this movie:

    mouse on board
    baseball bat
    passing joint

  • SEX/NUDITY:

Sorry guys this one doesn't have much in the way of nudity; thanks a lot Dana Kimmell. (see Trivia)

  • Debbie (Tracie Savage) is seen in a bikini. She and Andy have sex and nothing is seen. She takes a shower and there is a very brief tit shot. There are also some full body shots of her in the shower but they are obscured by the shower curtain.
  • NOTE: Debbie was also a practitioner of the no underwear trend (see part 2). Look as she undresses to fool around with Andy.
