Pledge of Allegiance

"The first time the pledge was recited was during the National School Celebration in 1892, 400 years after Columbus discovered America. It was written by either James B. Upham or Francis Bellamy, or possibly both. The pledge was resized in 1923 and 1924 by the National Flag Conferences of the American Legion. The words "under God" were added in 1954."

My version of the article in World Book Encyclopedia. 1992. P. 15.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisble, with liberty and justice for all.
