History of Dum Dums

Dum Dum Pops were originated by Akron Candy Co., Akron, Ohio, in 1924.  I.C. Bahr, the early sales manager of the company, named the ball-shaped candy on a stick and figured dum-dum was a word any child could say.

In March of 1953, Spangler purchased the trade name along with equipment and machinery to make Dum Dums and moved the operation to Bryan.  After the wax wrapped pops had been in production in Bryan for just four weeks, a celebration was held to mark their entry into the Spangler fold.  On June 4, 1953, a special Dum Dum booth outside the factory supplied Dum Dums free to all the children (grownups, too) and offered chances to win special gift prizes.

Regular Dum Dums come in 10+ flavors and are enjoyed by kids of all ages!  Flavors are Sour Apple, Lemon, Cream Soda, Orange, Cherry, Butterscotch, Root Beer, Watermelon, Peach, Grape, Blu Raspberry, Strawberry, and Mixed Flavor.  If you counted 13 flavors you are correct...you get 10 in the larger bags - more than you get with other lollipops.

We not only make traditional Dum Dums, but also Super Dum Dum Pops,  Dum Dum Valentine Pops, Dum Dum Easter Pops, and Ice Cream Dum Dum Pops.
Dum Dums have their own mascot - The Dum Dum Drum Man who has been with us since 1966!
