Transatlantic Flight – Day 3

Reykjavik, Iceland!  Who would have thought that by Day 2 we would already be half-way to our destination!  The weather patterns were pleasantly supportive yesterday as they pushed us along with a 20 knot tail wind.  But what about the weather at our next destination?  Wick, Scotland!  A remote fishing town with a rugged coastline and a notorious reputation for fog and poor visibility.

N6511Y enjoys basking herself in the sun on a windy morning in Reykjavik.  Her pilots get busy checking weather reports, printing forecast reports, and filing the flight plan to Wick.  It is a glorious day in Iceland and I wish we could stay a little longer to visit some of the coastline.  As we get ready to depart N6511Y makes a plea to at least take a little flight to Vestmannaeyjar, a beautiful tiny airport on the little island off the coast of Iceland.  But the winds are blowing at 30 knots gusting to 50!  Even she agrees that this is a little risky and we should instead push forward to our next destination!

The unfolding scenery is captivating as we cross the coastline and watch the river sediments flow into the Atlantic Ocean.  In the distance we can spot Vestmannaeyjar and I take a quick photo as a reminder to come back one day when the winds are calmer so we can land on the little island off the coast of Iceland!

As N6511Y stretches her wings over the Atlantic Ocean once again, I scroll through the GPS flight plan to verify our reporting waypoints.  It is hard to believe....in only a couple of hours we will arrive on the coast of Scotland, perhaps one of the most beautiful aerial sights on Earth!  Over the years I have often daydreamed of this coastline but this time I have to remind myself that it is no longer a dream….we are finally here!

The majestic rugged coast of Scotland is ever so beautiful!  We arrive at an altitude of 10,000 feet and shall not miss this opportunity to take a few photos.  With a quick call on the radio we cancel our IFR flight plan and make a visual descend on the coast for a sightseeing tour of the coastline castles and the grazing Scottish sheep!  So many times have I dreamt of a low level flight along these cliffs – the incredible sight of rushing waves crashing onto the rugged coastline.

As we fly along the coast our curiosity takes us to the majestic castles that are glistening in the distance.  All is calm on the surrounding farmlands as the sheep enjoy their afternoon and watch N6511Y fly around the castles to bring greetings from a land far away!
