Entry for May 14, 2007

Well it's been a while so time to make another entry.  I completed my "MultiWonder" project, which combines my three monoband Small Wonder QRP rigs into one enclosure.  The reason I did this is because I got tired of taking all three radios along on camping trips or for field day.  The three Small Wonder kits were purchased and built at different times, so they went into different enclosures.  I never thought at the time about combining them.  However, after taking all three radios camping several times, I soon realized that I put them into enclosures which were much too large (especially the SW40+ and SW30+).  The sports bag that I carry my QRP radios in is just a little too small to carry all three radios, especially with several gel cell batteries to power them with.  I realized I wanted to either put the radios in smaller enclosures, perhaps the A/B switch boxes I had on hand, or better yet put all three in one enclosure & make it a tri-band radio.

And so the MultiWonder was born.  I came up with the name Multi, since there are three of them, and Wonder, for Small Wonder.  Plus I think it's a wonder that I was able to keep all the wire connections to the rotary switch straight and wire them up correctly.

I'm glad I was able to get this project done in time for Field Day, which I will be participating in at Twin Bridges State Park in Oklahoma with the Four State QRP Group.  I'm really looking forward to another weekend of camping & radio.  Plus I can't wait to try out my portable telescoping flagpole as a mount for my inverted-V.  I also got a decent solar panel at Ozarkcon with which I plan to keep my gel cells charged.

I can't believe it's two weeks after Ozarkcon and I forgot to make a blog entry about it.  I sure had a good time at the best QRP convention in the Midwest.  It was nice to see so many in attendance, to listen to some interesting & informative talks, and to have some more good food at the Friday night banquet.  And I also picked up some treasures at the swap meet.  I hope Dave, W0CH, gets the Ozarkcon website updated soon with this year's photos.
