Jabiru

After the crank broke on the Corvair, I ended up replacing the engine with a Jabiru 3300.  So far I am impressed with the results. The weigh in showed a loss of 71 pounds. I will admit that I didn't have the lightest Corvair FWF out there, but 71 pounds is impressive! At this time I only have an hour or so on the new engine, but it appears to be a bit stronger than the Corvair. So far I have had the plane up to 127 MPH. I'll post some numbers as soon as I get the engine broke in and quit fiddling with the prop.

I used the same mount that I had when I had the VW installed.  The engine mounting points were very close to the same. I just made a jig to the proper size and stretched them apart. Then heated the whole thing with a torch to help everything settle into its new position. I also had to add a torque tube and some 1 inch spacers to help with the C/G. The VW was originally installed without any offset, so I put on a few large washers to twist the engine to the right a bit. It could still use some more offset.

Any time you make modifications to the original plans, things don't fit right. My mount puts the engine a bit lower than the Jabiru mount would, so that affected the fit of the cowling. My choice was to either modify the cowling or replace the engine mount. The cowling lost, and I took the jig saw to it.  Notice the top is now aluminum instead of fiberglass.
