Bad Guy Story:
I was working for a two-way shop in the Quad-Cities at the time as a elec. tech. One of our customers had a B&E and lost a pair of 800 MHz trunked portables with chargers. The theives thought that it was pretty cool to have their own "private" radio system as they never heard any other traffic on the hot radios. (We had taken the other radios that the customer owned and reprogrammed them to another id.) We also programmed the radio shop portables so that we could listen. One of the guys from the shop had DFed the signals and had determined that the radios were being used not far from where they had been "borrowed".
With the amount of traffic that was taking place, we decided that the detectives in PD should be listening as well. As you might suspect, theives are some times kind of dumb. It also doesn't help much by getting stupider by doing drugs. The kids were soon allowed to play with the new toys. The radios were capable of doing telephone interconnects or phone patches. The people were never able to figure out how to work this feature. We had disabled the ability to make long distance calls just in case they did. The fact that the radios had keypads made it fun to at least push on the keypad while keying the radio. We soon realized that they were trying to "dial" the same 7 digits. I fired up the service monitor and activated the dtmf decode feature. Just for luck, I was able to decode a string of digits. It was the the last one that day and I was wanting to go home since it was after 5:00 PM. The number I had decoded was a local number for the area which we were dealing with. I called the detective, who was very happy to hear that we were able to give him the info.
One of the kids really knew how to be professional in the use of these not so cheap radios. He decided that pretending to be the fire dept. would be cool. He put out a fake fire call across the radio but used a not so fake address. Needless to say, I was pretty much blown away with this traffic. I called the detective on the case who of course was even more excited than I was. He as well, had also been monitoring. He told me that the address and phone number matched, was well known to the PD and that they would handle the case as time allowed. (The typical comment that is routinely given.)
I found out the next day that the PD visited the bad guys that evening. It seems that there was going to be a little party that very night. Not only were the people involved in the B&E arrested (they did a few others besides) but it seems that some of the people invited to the party were also wanted on warrants.
