Entry for July 20, 2007-City Camping

Now that its summertime, my thoughts inevitably turn to campimg and outdoor living. I mean city-camping. Never heard of it? Well allow me to enlighten you. For the first year in more than I can recall, I will not be going on my usual camping trip. Reason? I'm no longer homeless. But there are shelters (and I use the term loosely) you say? I guess a few , a precious few, still do exist but for me and countless others, they are foreboding rather than welcoming-when you have to sleep with your shoes on for fear they might walk off the next morning before thier owner , it pays to seek out alternative housing. My solution? A tent.

Costing beteween $20- $50 typically, a decent small (2-4 man) tent can be an excellent investment. It should be rather small, so it doesn't stick out. Covering it with camaflage tarp, light branches, leaves, ect. can help. Also a cell phone is imperative, and if possible, a 2-way radio set which can be used for communication, or as an intercom so you can hear if anyone or thing is approaching at night. A lantern and several flashlites, and a five gallon jug of water should be kept on hand, as well as a box of baking soda (puts out grease fires) safety matches wrapped in waterproof covering and a lighter or two. Finally, Sleeping bags, and whatever other blankets, comfortors, ect, that can be aquired are integral. Just because it happens to be warm out now does not mean you can skimp on blankets; aquire as many as you possibly can because when the cold sets in, these layers may literally save your life. Also they will make layng on the ground immensely more comfy.

Clear a site a little larger than the actual area you will need for the tent, with a buffer zone of one foot for the sides and rear, and enough in the front so you can set up a small campfire pit.
