Iduki Dam
photo

We had found out the day before there was an enormous dam right in Iduki. We found out because everyone told us then we could see it with our eyes. It was big. An early start and we headed towards what we thaught must be the way to the dam. We started talking to two guys walking along the road. “This way this way” they said. We stopped along the way at the government guest house to try and book a room for that night but it was still “fully booked” back on the track and we caught up with the two guys again and they invited us into their home. We met their family, they lived very close to the dam and they grew coffee, cocoa pepper and a variety of other nuts, fruits seeds and spices for a living. They gave us tea and offered us food, a photo with the family and a bit of dancing around and we where off to the dam. The two guys came with to show us the way. About 5 minutes down the hill and we where at the dam wall there where guard posts full of army and police security forces, many no photography signs and a ticket office as well as the usual sweet and snack sellers. We bought our tickets and went through the security check and walked out onto the dam wall. It is huge. 123m high. That is high. It was really fun to spit off, I don’t care how immature it sounds, your spit would drift and catch up currents. Amazing. Also the views where brilliant. There where two huge dam walls which the locals called the two dams even though it was one water mass. The two dams are separated by a mountain which in turn forms part of the wall. We walked over the first wall it was over 100m long. These dam walls are some of the first hydro electric schemes in India. Then about a half hour walk around the mountain and we reach the other dam wall. This is an arch dam (the other is straight). This arch dam is the first arch dam in Asia and the shape is amazing. Looking down the water is very very clear. We met some of the police who guard the dam walls so heavily. Very nice guys who mostly like fishing in the dam. The first guys we meet claim you can catch 30kg fish in the dam and he claims he has seen one this big but never caught one himself. The next guy claims there are 150kg fish in the dam. I once caught a fish thiiiiiiiiiisssssss big and all that the claims seemed a little spurious. After checking out the dams completely we headed back around the mountain back through security and we headed down to a small jetty on the dam where a speed boat was parked. Time for a swim. The water was clean and refreashing and with great views of the dam walls the only thing missing was a chocolate icecream.
