Indonesia 2007, India 2006
This is an online journal of my trips overseas
The Second day at Fort Kochin.

Out there again and we hired push bikes. For just Rp 6 per hour a bargain. We where able to cover a lot of ground and the traffic wasn’t too thick but still a bit crazy, it is India. We went the 100 and something year old Santa Cruz Basilica. It was quite beautiful. Next we visited the bishops house. It is the residents of the Bishops of Fort Kochin. In the front garden there is a small museum. At the door they asked Rp24. I talked to the guy running it and said we just wanted to visit for a short time and could we have a discount. I don’t know where the inspiration came from but it worked! Entry just Rp10! It was full of interesting religious artifacts and some nice old wooden furniture and some interesting crowns and scepters. There was a downstairs section but it was about 20cm deep in water and full of frogs. The stairs just lead into water. Back on our bikes and we passed a water tower. It looked big. It looked inviting. It looked like the tallest place in Fort Kochin. It wasn’t quite. We parked our bikes and ducked through the fence that was very open. There where no keep out signs (in English). On one side there was a rusty iron spiral stair case that went up up up about 70% of the way. Then there was a platform. Then a ladder going to the top. Of course we had to go up. It was awesome. Great views the air sweeter. Yi fan was a bit skeptical at first but then she came. It was great. Back on our bikes and we where off again. We headed across town to another museum. This one was packed with portraits and palanquins. All the famous Maharajas of the areas all with plaques explaining the great changes they made. The palanquins where the most interesting some embedded with ivory and all very short, id be very cramped sitting in any of them. Next we headed back across town to the ocean. We had planned to have a seafood lunch. There was a sort of seafood market set up with freash prawns as big as bananas, fish as big as primary school kids and enough squid to supply ink to the New York Times for the day. We selected and purchased 20 of these huge prawns, 2 squid and a huge red snapper. We bought some fresh vegetables from a market stall and found a restaurant to cook them for us. Try to imagine this. 20 Huge prawns (like small lobsters) all stuffed with garlic and butter and grilled. This huge fish around 2kg big red and fresh and the squid cooked with Turmeric to give it a deep yellow color that was cut through with the deep green parsley. A huge plate of chips and this awesome salad with fresh lime. All this cost us including the perfect cooking Rp 250 each (that’s just AU$7 per person) its criminally cheap. We sat there afterwards unable to move, the giant prawn shells mountains on our plates. We finished it off with Mango Lassie and fresh fruit juice. Unbelievable.
