This is an online journal of my trips overseas
Christmas in Bombay

To fly almost anywhere in the world Christmas eve is a trying experience. India was no different. The famous Fogs of Dehli engulfed the city delaying all planes. I got in from Kathmandu ok but my flight out was 2 hours late. This according to a newspaper article I read was nothing compared with the “average” delay being 6 hours! They say everything happens for a reason. Flight delays happen because of rush and fog but I did get to meet a Bollywood dancer who suggested I go see a film he was in Dhoom 2. Due to the fact we where going to Mumbai Bollywoods centre it was almost mandatory! I finally got to Mumbai airport at around 8pm and had to get to the International arrivals to pick up my friend clay. Finally found him around 9pm and tried to call my friend Yuki because it was her apartment in which we where planning to stay. The phones where not working surprise surprise Indian telecoms never I mean always let you down. After showing the address to the Rickshaw driver and haggling like crazy we got one and left. Turned out after saying yes yes yes the driver knew sort of where to go but not really. This was clays first hours in India, cows in the streets, a tiny rickshaw hurtling through the Mumbai streets on Christmas eve. Beggars and sellers of everything from balloons to toothbrush and combs at every set of traffic lights at which we sometimes decided to stop at. We eventually found the apartments paid the rickshaw and went upstairs only to find nobody in the apartment and the door locked. Actually we weren’t too sure which door it was as the numbering system resembled the chaos in the streets bellow. So I knew we had to call. (fortunately I had her mobile number. We started knocking on neighbors doors and fortunately the first was a kind elderly gentleman who invited us in made us tea and let us use the phone. I called my friend Yuki and it turned out because my flight was late she thought we couldn’t make it or something. Additionally her room mate had lost the key and locked everyone out. Fortunately Yuki was at a party in another friends apartment and we where invited. Yuki came with Marcus (great guy with a great name) and picked up Clay and I in the rickshaws. We turned off the main streets into the darkness of slums. The biggest goats you have ever seen in your life (over 1.5m long) peered from the side of the road and the dim halogen lights emanated a weird glow from the surrounding slums. After about 10 minutes we arrived at three 16 story apartment buildings fenced in and called Sagar City. The apartments where very nice and we went up to the 6th floor for the Christmas party. We arrived, great music was pumping from a makeshift sound system set up around a laptop. Flashing lights had been arranged everywhere including bright red floor lights, the drinks where flowing and the food plentiful. About 20 people all in their early to mid 20s seemed to be having the time of their life’s. We at first thought we had stumbled upon a great party, it turned out we had stumbled upon almost 2 weeks of culture, fun, touring, partying and some friendships that will last. The party was loads of fun dancing, drinking, eating and meeting people from Iceland, Canada, Germany, Poland, USA, Malaysia and locals as well. Most are or Where Trainees for big companies some have stayed to work while others will soon. A great mix of people. Finally we retired not back to Yuki’s house but to the 15th floor where some of the people from the party lived. It was around 2am and thus ended Christmas eve in Mumbai and Clays first day in India.
