Flight to Lhasa
photo

The flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa deserves its own entry. We flew up from smog drenched Kathmandu and towards the mighty Himalayas. The approach was magic. Instead of flying straight over as I expected we proceeded to fly along the range. We sat on the left hand side as suggested. The views of the Himalayas so close was unforgettable. You could see the glaciers, the snow drifts and the frozen rivers slicing through valleys like silver Nepali Ghurka knifes. The mountains took on a sort of blue silver glow. Apparently we passed Everest but it was nothing that stood out as many of the mountains nearby to it are almost as tall anyway. We had about 15 – 20 minutes of spectacular mountain views, something that drives home that this is the tallest mountain range in the world. We finally flew over the range onto the Tibetan plateau. The views where equally as beautiful. A desert landscape splodged with snow lumps. The pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, grays, browns combined to give a feeling that makes it easy to understand how a book with the title magic and mystery in Tibet would have been so easy to name. The other brilliant land-form where the rivers. They where a sort of jade green and cut through the red browns of the desert split into many streams like veins in skin, it was as if you could see through the outside layers of Tibet’s skin. Strangely beautiful.
