Fuyuko Neko's Cat Chat
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >
No, this isn't about cats, although I do love the little furry ones. Just the frontpage for my website on anime.
Progress? What's that?

I don't know (and I don't care) how many of you are science minded out there, but I do know that this is the worst slap in the face medical science has taken in some time. Neither do I care if you hate (or support) President Bush, but  i hope you can agree that this is one of his stupider decision while in the White House. Going into Iraq and picking fights with Iran and Korea was stupid, but this takes the cake.

One of the best (and only) industries we have going for us in America is our medical research one. Our automobile and manufacturing industries are largely dying out or being moved overseas (God bless those greedy CEOs), but our science and technology industries were still here. After this, however, it'll be  a wonder if they stay. I certainly wouldn't want to be trying to get research money and maintain a research company in this country, especially with other nations fast equalling the United States in having the technology for such advanced research. More to the point, other nations may not be so tunnel-visioned as to not see the benefits from stem cell research.  Yes it may seem like a horrible real life step towards a grotesque sci-fi film, but with the proper restrictions on where to get the embryos and stem cells needed for the research there really isn't a problem.

Apparently, however, President Bush thinks that rather than create defining laws to progress with this medical goldmine our morally founded (more like backwards) nation should just halt the advancement of stem cell studies. No it doesn't matter that we could find the roots of such illnesses as cancer and Alzheimer's and try to create preventative medicine or cures for them. Think of the unborn babies that were only dumped anyways! Think of adopting them to God knows who instead of killing them in 'inhuman and needless research', think of how warped they will be as display children for the huamitarian cause. Isn't that better than learning to save many of the thousands of loyal American citizens who die each year from diseases we could leanr to cure? And oh, the horror, think of the gene splicing that those 'mad and immoral scientists' could get up to! The cloning (which we can do anyway...)! "The horror! The horror!" (Heart of Darkness quote).

Personally, going into a science field of study myself, i find this kind of reaction to simple and potentially life-changing medical research just plain stupid. Not to mention that it averts valuable progress that would help our nation's floundering economy. Ugh. Do it properly and oversee it with the right rules, and what's the problem? Nothing, except our senseless fear of the unknown.
