Being Neal Sample
Sort of like "Being John Malkovich," but for my own head.
The rise of "Long Tail analysis" is cute. But wrong.

In situations where popularity is determined by the lowest common denominator, the Long Tail will thus lead to improvement in a society's level of culture. TV is a good example of this: TV stations have limited time slots, so the opportunity cost of each time slot is high; stations therefore choose programs that have the broadest appeal. But as the number of TV stations grows or TV programming is distributed through other digital channels, the choice of TV programs grows and the cultural level rises.

Another misapplication of economic theory to culture.

hey neal, what about the long tail in search? isn't that significant? doesn't that create niche markets for keywords and stuff like that? and what about netflix -- isn't long-tailing it good for business and for people w/eclectic tastes?

...just don't tell me you don't like tivo and rss ;)

Long-tail is very much right re: Netflix! Netflix is the economic argument incarnate... lowered storage and distribution costs make it an effective delivery mechanism for material goods.

However, trying to to apply the same analysis to end up with "improvement in a society's level of culture" through a greater number of channels on TV devoted to nothing but racquetball is crazy talkin'!
