Hi, my name is Mzilikazi Ndlovu.
I produce and host two weekly shows on CKUW 95.9 FM which bring a wide array of African and Black music to Canadians. CKUW 95.9 FM is a listener-driven community radio station, broadcasting from The University of Winnipeg, in Manitoba (Canada). Its innovative programming reaches nearly one million people in the City of Winnipeg and surrounding area. Within the province of Manitoba, CKUW 95.9 FM has the greatest range of programs, from spoken work to worldbeat, from accapella to kwaito and from kwasa-kwasa to township jive.
The two shows I host are: The African Summit and Forward March. The African Summit broadcasts Fridays from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.. CST and showcases African music both old and new, from Cape to Cairo. On this show I play various type of African music including accapella, gospel, hip-hop, funk, imbube, jazz, mbira, iscathamiya, rhumba, kwasa-kwasa and township jive. I also conduct interviews with Africans living in Canada. My aim is to raise awareness about African and its contemporary socio-economic issues among Canadians. Forward March transmits Sundays from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. CST. It features black music specifically from the Americas - from Cuban jazz to Dancehall and reggae.
On my shows I provide information about the history of African/Black music and how it has influenced other cultures over the years. I advance awareness about issues affecting African people both within Africa and abroad.
As an African (Zimbabwean) living in Canada, I love promoting our music here. Two groups from Zimbabwe, Black Umfolosi and Sunduza, came to Canada and performed at annual cultural festivals. Afterwards, I promoted their works and today they are well-known in Canada.
