William P. SMITH

A story my grandmother remembered:  William P. Smith, Edith's husband, had two fellows put in jail for stealing his honey.  Years later, after they got out, William went out to the barn across the road from the house at some distance to do chores and didn't come back.  Edith went out to see where he was, but couldn't find him.  She sent the boys to get neighbors and they searched all night.  Came the dawn, they found an old mule dragging a man around and around a clearing in the woods with a rope around his neck.  That was the end of William.
