Dear Mildred:
With reference to your letter and our phone conversation, I will try and give
you a picture of Grandma?s family nee Tole, much of
which is from memory.? The first time I
met the Tole family was on my visit in 1914, which is
63 years ago.? At that time Aunt Mary was
still living, our great Aunt, wife of Michael Tole?Grandma?s
brother.? She was then living on a farm
two miles from Ovid, N.Y.
where they settled when they came to this country.? I do not have the date they settled
there.? They were all born in Dublin,
Ireland.? If my memory serves me right, she said they
were married she to Michael Tole, and Grandma to one
of the Lamb brothers before they came over.?
The Lambs did not like New York
because the soil was very poor for farming, as the only crops were grapes,
apples and bing cherries, so
they decided to move west where they settled in Wis.? As you know, a short time later Grandma?s
husband died, and she came to Glencoe to work for the Gurnees.? Grandpa at that time was also working for the
Gurnees and that is where they met.? Now a little about the Michael Tole family:? they
had five children; Jenny, Mate, Frank, Margaret, and Edward.? On my first trip Edward had passed away a
short time before.? I shall always
remember that visit?she was real Irish.?
(Aunt Mary)? Shortly after that
she sold the farm and moved to Ovid to be near her daughter, Mate.? I saw her several times on our visits east
until she passed away.? There were four
grandchildren?Jenny had three and Frank had one.? Eileen who is the only one living?she is the
one I write to, never married and the last of the Tole
family.? Mate was married to Pat Savage,
president of the Ovid bank.? Margaret was
a trained nurse and never married.? I
shall always remember those trips as they were a fine family.? Frank was a conductor on the Leigh High
railroad.? Mate and Pat had no car and
Frank would always see that we had a car?his remarks were ?George here are they
keys.?? I think about them a lot.? Eileen is the only one left and she is past
seventy.? This is about all I can tell
you.
Love,
George
