ELLEN BROWN

A brief summary taken from Dan Hunt's book

Ellen Brown was born in the Hunter River Valley area on 10-2-1838, the daughter of James Brown and his wife, Margaret Coakley who married at the C. of E. Church, Maitland on 25th August, 1832. Both were R.C.  James born 1805, Co. Clare, Ireland and Margaret, b.1812, Co. Waterford, Ireland.  They met at Paterson’s Plains in the Hunter Valley.

In the late 1840s, they traveled to New England with their family of four where James is thought to have selected some land.  Things did not work out; Margaret left the children with friends, saying she would return, she went to Singleton where she remained for some years.

Margaret attended her daughter Annie’s wedding in 1863 to Edward Topper at Inverell and seems to have spent her remaining years with her daughters Margaret and Annie, dying at Copes Creek on the 3rd September 1875 and was buried in the Inverell cemetery.

The children, who were getting on in years by this time were apparently reared and educated by the people Margaret left them with.  When they were old enough, they worked for people in the district.  Ellen happened to be working at Tienga Station where Jacob Hunt was also working. And that is where they met and married.
