phnom penh (27 dec 2003)
i didnt really want to go to phnom penh but wins insisted that we visit the tuol sleng museum (where they detained prisoners during the khmer rouge regime) and the killing field too (where the prisoners were executed after being interrogated at tuol sleng museum)...so in the end i relented.
we basically spent less than 24-hours in phnom penh. it was a nice town by itself, but the journey to the killing field on the back of a motorbike was a dusty and a back-breaking exercise altogether. the killing field is 15 km out of town through dirt road. so think again before you decide to go on a motorbike!!
the royal palace in phnom penh where apparently if you go during the full moon, you could see prince norodom performs prayer rituals just outside the palace
serenity of a buddha, at the silver pagoda; the royal palace
pictures of the tortured prisoners at tuol sleng museum. the khmer rouge made a systematic record of details and pictures of all the prisoners at the tuol sleng prison.
the tuol sleng prison was once a school and some rooms were divided into small cells to keep the prisoners..
another picture exhibit at the museum
the painting was done by one of the prisoner who witnessed the scene at the tuol sleng prison...
a scene in the prison room..
a mass grave at the killing field of chong ekk. prisoners were hit on the head then the throat slit before being dumped into the mass grave.
