Furniture is an unusual item of discussion. A lot of times we purchase a piece without considering what I call "clean-ability"...What that means is that  we should consider what the cost of maintenance is going to be and if we are willing to pay that price.

Depending on the type fabric content, you will be able to determine what type or method cleaning will be needed. One of the variables is what type of use the furniture is going to undergo. Are there going to be kids or pets on the furniture? If the couch is cotton you need to understand that water will cause an elevated PH which will be shown by a general "browning" condition. Natural fibers must be cleaned using a solvent.

The problem with solvents is that they are not as effective of a cleaner as water is. Water is Natures solvent and works well on synthetics. The other problem with the use of solvents is that they tend to run a little spendy and disclaimers are needed to ensure that the technician will not be liable for a less than adequate job as a result of the ever possible product failure.

A general rule of thumb is that if you can't use water on the fabric of your furniture without a problem of "brown-out" occurring then you have a solvent clean only "problem".
