Lake Placid was once the bear hunting territory in the country. The Lake Istokpoga area rich with palmetto berries and acorns, filled with yellow jackets and bumblebee nest provided acres of huckleberries and blueberries offered enough for these bears to eat.
When settlers moved into the area bringing cattle and razorback hogs of course the bears thought they had food and became hunted to protect the livestock. The meat was salted, jerked or dried and bear grease was far better than lard. When a mother was killed the young cubs were sometimes kept as pets and became very friendly.
This wonderfully detailed mural comes with rawling sounds of playful bears and bees buzzing around. If you look really close you should find two bear paws and an Indian.
