In camps recalled by this mural, workers collected gum from the trees that was distilled into turpentine. The chipper removes the bark and cuts a pattern called "cat faces." while inserted into the gash, a metal strip served to direct the gum into clay Herty pots. The pots were emptied into barrels that were lifted onto wagons drawn by mules to the stills where the turpentine was refined. Owners of wooden ships used this pine gum for caulking their vessels.
