Nova Scotia (New Scotland):
To Many the Province of Nova Scotia (latin for New Scotland), is called "Canada's Ocean Playground". With beautiful beaches and fabulous seafood it deserves the name. Nova Scotia is the perfect place to reset your inner priorities to the tides, instead of hectic timetables. It is a place for peace and quiet, an active retirement, escape from the hustle and bustle, unforgettable summer memories for your children (which I have many of). Nova Scotia is truly a place to unwind and meet friendly people.
Nova scotia has many mysteries of the sea.
There are years of research and interviews with people who claim to have seen the many unexplained
happenings on the Northumberland Strait. Read a few of the unexplained Mysteries of the Sea! Enjoy :)
WOMAN IN WHITE
On Pictou Island, on a dark dirt road there has appeared, Pictou Islands Woman in White. Her hair streaming out behind her, as if the wind were blowing but there is no wind. Her arms out stretched and her eyes staring out across the water. One young Pictou Islander said he managed to grab her hair once and giving it a pull her head came off in his hands and she continued to walk down the road. Since that day the people on Pictou Island said she hasnt been seen since. Some say that because without a head she couldnt find her way in the dark!
STRANGE LIGHTS
The Phantom Ship of Northumberland Strait is not the only strange light to be seen on the waters of Nova Scotia. There is one called the Teaser Light. It is said to be seen bounding over the water. Although similar to the Phantom Ship it is never known to take the form of a vessel. This Teaser Light has been seen on the waters of Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia. It bounds across the water and grows to a glare like a ship exploding at sea but there is no sound. Dating back to the war of 1812 between England and the United States the Maritime provinces assisted the Mother country in her war with the republic of the US. One of these vessels was called the Teaser. It was short lived and after taking 14 prizes of war, in December of 1812 the H.M.S. San Domingo captured the saucy little ship and ruined her career by burning her at sea. The Americans outfitted another ship and called her the Young Teaser. The British set out to end the career of the Young Teaser and caught her in Mahone Bay. As the long-boats, filled with armed British tars and carrying heavy gun began to overtake the American raider, the Young Teaser blew up. Only seven of the crew survived.
GHOST SHIPS
There are many more ships that sail their ghostly way along the Atlantic Coast. One of the most famous ghost-ship in the world is The Flying Dutchman. The story behind this legend is that of the young Dutch Captain, Van Straaten, who was condemned, as a penalty for his sins to sail the seas around the cape of Good Hope without ever reaching safe haven. His ship is said to be seen, a black spectral vessel, and seaman alter their course to escape its fatal influence.
Other ships that sail their ghostly way along the atlantic coast is Le naugrage Anglasis, which, in 1711 sank in the Gulf of St. Lawrence just off the Gaspe Coast. Another ship that is little know is the schooner Breeze, whose captain was condemned to sail forever because he carried away a beautiful girl against her wishes. The Dead Ship of Harpswell carrying the omen of death as it sails Casco Bay of Maine. The St martins lost in the Bay of Fundy, but said to reappear as a fire ship in September and October.
In all tales of ghost-ships the vessels are said to sail against the wind or travel fast without the aid of wind for their sails.and often the sighting of these ships foretells bad weather to come.
