I am very fortunate to work in a library system where there are many talented storytellers. My greatest inspiration comes from watching them perform, and sharing ideas with them. I also have a young child, and during the preschool years, we traveled around town, visiting storytimes at other libraries. I've had the privilege of seeing many fine programs from the audience perspective. I highly recommend observation of other storytellers' programs, for inspiration, and for idea sharing. Some other books and resources that are particularly helpful to me are: Storytimes for two-year-olds. 2nd ed. by Judy
Nichols; illustrated by Lori D. Sears. Family storytime: twenty-four creative programs for all
ages by Rob Reid. 52 programs for preschoolers: the librarian's year-round
planner by Diane Briggs. If your library doesn't have them, they are available for purchase from the American Library Association. Click on Children's Young Adult and School Service for a complete listing of titles. I'm a little teapot! presenting preschool storytime
compiled by Jane Cobb; illustrated by Magda Lazicka. Visit the website for Black Sheep Press. 2's Experience felt board fun by Liz & Dick Wilmes;
illustrations by Jane McDonnell. 2's Experience fingerplays by Liz & Dick Wilmes;
illustrations by Janet McDonnell. Available from Gryphon House (click on the Infants and Toddlers tab) Any book by Caroline Feller Bauer, including Celebrations, Read for the Fun of it, This Way to Books and others. Many of her books are available through ALA (see above). Dr. Bauer is a well known lecturer and authority on children's literature. She presents seminars all over the country, and if you ever have the opportunity to see her, I highly recommend her! Seminars by Dr. Peggy Sharp: I've attended two of them, and they were excellent! Read Ladybug and Babybug magazines, put out by the Cricket Magazine Group. I search these magazines for poetry ideas, short tellable tales, and fingerplays. |
