Sept. 11 Heroes Honored in central Plains Blood Donor Competition
Battle for the Badges is an annual blood drive that helps acknowledge how important it is to donate blood frequently.  Each donor votes for local police departments or for local fire departments, and then the winner is rewarded.  The Red Cross and the local organizers decided to hold this year's contest in honor of the New York City firefighters, police officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attack (Orfinger).  This year each donor was asked to sign a scrapbook, which would be given to New York City.  It was later decided to be given to a New York City firefighter, who was in a group of twelve, which were called, to help with the World Trade Center.  He was the only one out of the twelve to make it out alive.  The Red Cross took in over 1,500 pints of blood, and everyone was extremely grateful for all the New York City police and fire departments (Orfinger).
