I've been asked many times over the years, what exactly is it that I believe? Well, there is no exact answer. I was raised in a Catholic family. Do I believe in the Catholic religion? I do. I also believe in Taoist beliefs, Christian beliefs, Muslim beliefs, etc, etc. I truly don't believe there is any one answer, nor do I believe that what you call your god really makes a huge difference. Ethically speaking, the vast majority of religions, to include paganism, believe in the same core concepts:
1.) Treat others how YOU want to be treated. Growing up, it was called the golden rule. I prefer to call it common sense. And I personally take it to mean much more than just what comes immediately to mind. I take it to mean that in EVERYTHING I do, I at least attempt to consider how my actions affect others, because being responsible for my actions is important to me.
2.) Care for those around you. Hmmmm, see to me, that still falls under #1, but I realize that isn't the case to everyone. It is a concept rapidly disappearing around us, where the takers get stronger and the people giving become the victims, because they are vastly outnumbered. I've noticed that my willingness to give to others often comes as a surprise to those getting to know me. I personally believe that is very sad. I'd rather be the norm.
3.) Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... know what? Anything I can think of actually can fall into the catagory of #1..... treating others with respect. Remembering that tolerance is NOT just tolerance of YOU... it requires YOU to be tolerant as well. Allowing for mistakes... we ARE only human.
I believe for myself, that all this life is about, is the person that you are, the person you can be, and the person you choose to become. Does that mean I'm perfect.... oh HELL no.. hehehe.. it means I cut myself the slack that I would cut another person, and allow for mistakes. And I welcome those mistakes with open arms... because as my mom tells me.... people not making mistakes.... aren't DOING anything. |
