This is my friend Salina... She is the greatest... I have known her for about 2 1/2 years i belive... As with most of my friends... I have hundreds of stories about things that we have done together when with other friends...
Like the time that Salina, John, Sara & her boyfriend, my sister and I went to the hawk watch at effigy mounds and I found this wicked bug called an Ichneuman Wasp (excuse me if the spelling is incorrect) Very very freaky bug... She is the one who gave me my cactus who's name i have forgotten and my stuffed monkey named Jill... As of fall 2001 Salina has been in scotland going to grad school... The one other story i have for this page is the Canoe trip. (see below) Salina has been a good friend to me, she is always there for me and is a great and very fun person to know.
The canoe Trip from hell....
It was a bright and sunny day in (june or july). And the Nature something class sat awaiting the arrival of their instructor John... Talking in hushed tones they discussed what the 'suprise' they had been promised could be... Just ten John pulls up in a van pulling, just as we suspected, canoes... The trip started out pretty well, we drove out to our starting point, paired up, smeared on some sunscreen and pushed off... all was going well except for a few near collisions. We came to a place in the river where there was a tiny 'island' so to speak... On the right side there was a good ten feet of clearance... and on the right there was about half that.. The first canoe went through the right side.. which had a faster current and if you had your canoe aligned correctly, the current would grab you and whip you through. Well the second canoe chose the left and the third canoe took the right. As Salina and i lined our canoe up to go through the right side we noticed that the canoe ahead of us had gotten wedged in sideways. Trying to avoid them, but already too late, we steered sharply to the right (twords the bank) To avoid the near decapitation by a tree, i shoved against it. Needless to say, we flipped over. Standing there dripping i apoligized.. and was re-assured that it was allright. As we emptied our canoe of water and got started again, we laughed at what was accually, a very funny situation. As we got headed off again we laughed again at our mini 'accident'. Later down the river, we came to a place where the water shallowed on the right side, creating a very fast current on the left side. Salina and I then noticed that the canoe ahead of us had been thrown into, and their canoe capsized by, a tangle of tree roots and logs. Trying as hard as we could to stay as far to the right as we could get, Salina and I where pulled into the deeper water by the current, and were also thrown into the logs as well as the other canoe. Almost smashing into the two from the other canoe that were clinging to their capsized canoe. As our canoe flipped, we swam out from under it... Salina momentarily trapped under the canoe, re-surfaced after only about a second... And I, being pulled along by the current grabbed onto a log partially submerged under the water and clung to it screaming. As our canoe suctioned itself to the bottom of the river, we discussed how to get them out. My shoes, (my favorite sketchers!!!!) being tied to our canoe(not on my feet of course), were also pulled to the bottom of the river... So i walked barefoot up the riverm to get the other canoe and tell them what had happened. What was supposed to be a 1 1/2 hour class turned into a 6 hour adventure... Apart from the terror of the accident.. The day was extremly fun...
Although i don't think i will be going canoeing anytime soon....
