The episode begins with two window washers up on a high rise preparing for their work day. One worker, George, tells the other that today is his last day on the job--he's given his notice to quit. He's been under pressure from his family to get a more prestigious job. His friend tells him that he's making a mistake--he has everything he could ask for, a beautiful view and fresh air. George agrees, but feels he must placate his family. On the ground below, a woman (Arnelle) sits in her convertable arguing with her secretary over a cell phone. As the two window washers above her begin their work, the chain that is attached to George's harness snaps and he plummets twenty stories. Instead of falling to his death, however, he lands in a sitting position in the passenger seat of Arnelle's car, unharmed. It's hard to say who is more flabbergasted, Arnelle or George.
In the first act, we see Declan enter Peg's office, trying to tell her about the man that fell from twenty stories and was unharmed. She ignores him at first, but Declan charms her into giving him her attention and going with him to the hospital to visit George, who is only being held for observation. While they are there, they meet George's parents and younger sister, who seem to be the poster family for workaholics anonymous. George's sister, Susan, feels that his miraculous survival from the fall is a "sign" from God to change his life, and since he has no other explanation, George agrees. Declan thinks this is true also and points out to Peggy how similar George's "miracle" is when compared to Declan's own survival from the avalanche. Declan is sure this is a sign for George to change his life, as Declan did, and decides to help George do just that.
Declan also decides to investigate George's fall, trying to determine if it is explainable through science. He inlists Miranda's help with several experments to test wind velocity, updrafts, falls using dummies, etc. None of the experiments explain George's survival, however. Declan visits Arnelle, who is an architect in the building George fell from, to ask her permission to inspect her car. Later, when Declan talks to George about what direction his life should take, George explains that he always wanted to be an architect. Declan thinks this is too much of a coincidence, and convinces Arnelle to give George a job, which she does. It's a short-lived position, though, and George is fired in a matter of days. Declan then gets George a job working with computers, but this too is a failure. George gets a paper cut and winds up back in the hospital suffering from a staph infection.
In the meantime we learn that Arnelle is having some personal problems of her own. She has been searching for the biological daughter she have up for adoption twenty-five years ago. Through a series of "coincidences" Peggy is able to locate Arnelle's daughter for her and they set a date to reunite. When Declan questions Peg on her affinity for bringing families together (she also reunited Matt and his grandfather in the pilot episode) Peggy admits that it is indeed something that's very important to her. She has been searching for one of her own family members for many years and explains to Declan that she hasn't seen her father since she was fourteen. When George is released from the hospital, his doctor advises him to get plenty of fresh air and to exercise the hand and arm that was infected. George realizes that window washing is the perfect job for him. Whatever the reason for his fall, it wasn't a sign that he needed a new job. When we last see George he is back to work on the high rise he fell from. As he works, Declan and Peggy watch Arnelle at a park across the street where she is meeting her biological daughter for the first time. They are stunned when they see her daughter...it's George's sister, Susan. George's fall wasn't a sign to make changes in his life, it was simply a way of bringing Arnelle and Susan together.
