Journal Log: 12-15-07 'An Assassin's Tale'

Dear Diary:

We met at the Tilted Tankard during a large celebration for "__________" (the twerp). I was sitting next to the 'rogue' when his 'buddy' Garreck the Contractor approached and  drank our ale (which Gregor offered, since I was broke;) He talked about helping us out by offering a little guidance in the a small business deal. Something was mentioned about a 'sudden permanent accident' to a wizard called Valis if we headed out to the lizard men. Gregor almost blew it by just taking the job and not negotiating on the spell book, but he recovered and made a reasonable deal.

We left with our hirelings (4 brave souls). We road off into the swamp. We were attacked by a large bear in the night, but we managed to kill it even though it didn't seem to eager to confront us. Unfortunately, the dog growled and the bear smack on of the hirelings (almost killed him) and we all just tore into it. Bear meat is rather tasty if you season it correctly.

A couple of days later we managed to finally arrive at the keep. It appeared to be three towers in a gulley. We could have snuck around, but Raven just walked right on up and started hacking away. Unfortunately, we had to go in and support her otherwise we would have lost her for sure. Hey, even with our help 10-15 lizard men is no easy challenge. Then right after I put a few of them to sleep they seemed to reorganize themselves too quickly within seconds the other lizard men were kicking the other and ruining the spell. Then the drums started in, and more came out of the water, but that wasn't the worst of it. A wizard (Valis) on the tower used a sleep spell on our warriors and took them out, except the one with Raven. I too almost fell victim to his spell. Brother Herb was up to his arm pits in lizard men (3 - 4 on him at one point). Gregor snuck around took out one and headed up to the tower. Then the Wizard shot me with an acid arrow (I need that spell), so I shot him  back with two arrows (though he must have had some type of protective spell up). He followed up with a sleep spell that put me out of action. I don't know what happened after that. I do believe after talking to the rest that Greggor almost got a good piece of him, but somehow Greggor was nearly killed. The wizard took off and most of the lizard men fled, but we managed to mop up the rest.

For now we are patching ourselves up and getting out of the immediate area. We have to figure out how the wizard was able to respond so quickly and have prepared defensive spells for our arrival. If we can find a sneakier rout in to the place we will have a better possibility of being more successful. The hirelings are rather upset that we are now facing a wizard. Maybe more gold will help keep their loyalty, but personally they may not be made of the stuff we need.

Well I need to heal after almost being eaten alive from that acid arrow. Next time I have to have my Shield spell up prior to going into combat with that wizard. He is way too powerful for me, unless we can get the rest of the party on him before he can actually cast his spells. Hmm, flaming bottles of oil?
