Hakkai’s head appeared around the door to their room at the inn.

“I’m taking Goku, we are going to get provisions.  Can you stay here with Sanzo?”

Gojyo gave Hakkai a look of resignation.

“Okay, but if one of us is dead by the time you get back, it’s not my fault.”

Hakkai smiled.  “Duly noted.  I guess Sanzo will be a little… testy, when he finally wakes up.”

Gojyo grinned back.

“Have I ever told you that you are the master of understatement?”

“Once or twice, Gojyo, once or twice.”  And with that Hakkai disappeared to find Goku.

Gojyo leaned back in the only chair in the room.  It was rickety and uncomfortable but at least it allowed a view out of the window.  Gojyo enjoyed watching the ‘normal’ folk going about their day-to-day business.  He patted his pocket to find his ever present packet of cigarettes to find… nothing!

Frowning, he stood up and surveyed the room, Sanzo was lying on the only bed and three hastily put together futons lay on the floor in disarray, testament to their night’s occupation.  Still nothing.  Where the hell had he put them?  He could feel the tendrils of need gnawing at his mind.

Suddenly he noticed the packet on the table by the far wall next to a pitcher of water, Goku’s contribution to helping Sanzo get over his sunstroke.

“Must have fallen out of my pocket and been tidied up by Hakkai,” Gojyo muttered as he stroke quickly over to his cigarettes.  He opened the packet to fish one out, noting that there were only ten left, when he realised that he was being watched.  He placed the cigarette in his mouth and lit it, inhaling deeply and then shoved the packet back into his pocket.

“Welcome back to the land of the living, Sanzo.”

The violet eyes regarding him narrowed.  “What happened?”

“You got sunstroke, passed out – on me, I might add – and you have slept for a day and a night in this inn, the end.”

“I remember…” Sanzo’s fingers brushed his lips but he didn’t elaborate.

Gojyo wasn’t going to either so as he made his way back to the chair he decided to sow a seed of doubt in Sanzo’s mind and asked, “Did you dream?”

“Maybe,” came the reply, as Sanzo turned to look out of the window whilst running his fingers through his dishevelled blonde locks.

Gojyo sat down again on the chair and rocked back onto its hind legs, ignoring the chair’s protestations at such abuse.  He closed his eyes and took another long drag on his cigarette savouring the flavour and wondering at Sanzo’s seemingly good mood.  Then the cigarette in his hand was gone!

Red eyes met violet as the chair came to rest on all four of its legs once more with a bang.  The violence was too much for it and the chair shattered, sending Gojyo to the floor in an undignified heap.

“Oww!” he shouted, rubbing his tailbone and flicking his red hair out of his eyes.  He then jumped up and grabbed the cigarette out of Sanzo’s hand but not before Sanzo had had a deep drag on it.

“Give that back, you bastard!”

Sanzo smirked, but dutifully handed over the cigarette.

Gojyo shook his head.  “All of it.”

Sanzo looked confused briefly before Gojyo grabbed him around the nape of the neck and pressed their lips together.  Sanzo exhaled in surprise, gifting his second hand smoke back to the red headed man then he slapped Gojyo across the face hard.

Gojyo didn’t flinch.  He turned back to face Sanzo, a red welt appearing on his cheek, and licked his lips before telling the monk, “Mmm, I could get used to you tasting of my cigarettes instead of that shit you usually smoke.”

Sanzo’s eyes flashed.  “You will not get the chance to get used to anything, you perverted kappa!  That is the last time you will touch me!”

Gojyo smiled, there was nothing like a good challenge.  “Never say never, Sanzo, you are only human after all.”
