Import Addresses

');if(navigator.userAgent.indexOf('Opera')>=0)D.close();}})();">Import Addresses

What is it?

This bookmarklet will import addresses into your Runbox Address book. The address must be in the format of a CSV (Comma Separated Value) file, with each field value within double quotes and the first line containing the field names. The is the format that can be exported from a Yahoo! Address Book that is reffered to as Yahoo! CSV format.

This bookmarklet will only work when launched from the Address Book page.

What does it work with?

It has been tested using Mozilla 1.5a (build 20030710), IE 5.5 (5.50.4807.2300) and Opera 7.11 (build 2887) running under Windows 2000 and Windows 98. I do not have IE 6 or Netscape but it should also work with those.

How do I install it?

The link near the top of this page called "Import Addresses" is the bookmarklet to launch the JavaScript applet. To save a bookmarklet, right click on the bookmarklet link and choose the item to add a bookmark (will usually say bookmarks or favorites). Or, drag the bookmarklet link to your bookmark toolbar.

How does it work?

By clicking on the "Import Addresses" bookmarklet, you open the "Import Addresses" window. The bookmarlet "instructs" the window to load the applet content from a remote javascript file. This approach allows the bookmarklet to be small in size (so it should even work with IE 6).

Once the "Import Addresses" javascript applet is loaded, it will display the import page.

Here are the steps for importing address data:

(1) You must first paste the CSV file contents into the "Address Data" text area at the top of the page.

(2) Once the data is loaded, press the "Start" button. This will activate the "Get Field Names" button.

(3) Press the "Get Field Names" button. The program will fill-in all the lists with the field names. The "Assign Fields" button will then be activated.

(4) You must know go through all the Runbox Address Book fields listed and assign a field name from the import data. If there is no data that can go into a Runbox field, leave it marked "-Not Assigned-" and no data will be imported into the field. Once you've assigned all the fields press the "Assign Fields" button.

(5) The first Address record will be parsed from the CSV data and the "Add Contact" and "Next Contact" buttons will be activated. Press "Add Contact" will add the current Address record to the Runbox Address Book. A window will be opened to show the response from Runbox as a result of the add. It should have a status line of "addr_saved" if the record was successfully saved. If it indicates an error, you can edit any of the information and try to save again.

(6) Pressing "Next Contact" will parse the next record from the data. You repeat the process for all the records in the data. At any time you can press the "Reset" button to reset to the beginning (a reset can not undo already saved contact information).
