"Michael?" Maria said, almost in shock. Michael and the alien were lying on the ground in a position that looked like they were hugging, but they weren't. And, that gun had gone off.
All of a sudden, the man shoved Michael off him, and he rolled off limply. Maria could see the hole in his chest. She couldn't tell whether or not it was over his heart, but it had to be. He wasn't moving.
"Michael," she nearly screamed, starting to run to him, but the man leapt to his feet and held the gun on her, "Nobody moves."
"You killed him," Maria said emotionally, looking at Michael who lay perfectly still on the ground.
"So I did," the man said, shrugging as he too stared at Michael, "Oh well, it was just a matter of time anyway. Now, who's next?"
"You," Maria said viciously. And then she did something stupid, she jumped at him. It was ignorant, it was irrational, but she wanted to rip his head off. He had killed Michael, and nothing mattered.
She saw the man aim the gun at her, and prepare to pull the trigger. She saw in a flash that it was all over for her. She was going to die, but at least then she would be with Michael. She only hoped that the rest made it and defeated these bastards.
But, as she saw the barrel of the gun as she flew through the air, she noticed it never went off. The alien's hand erupted in a bright light, almost like fire, and as the gun finally did go off, it was aimed in a different direction.
Maria heard a scream as she hit the ground after her leap, but she didn't pay any attention. She was focused entirely on Michael who was laying three feet from here, propped up slightly, one hand held in the air.
He was alive.
Maria allowed herself to smile brightly and scrambled over to him. "You're alive," she said happily, grabbing his face in her hands.
Michael was breathing heavily, and she noticed the hole in his chest. "Just barely," he said faintly, "But enough to keep you alive too. I need Max or Isabel to fix me. Now."
"Okay," Maria said hurriedly, wanting to keep him alive and here with her. She turned around, anxiously trying to find either Max or his sister. But, it was impossible.
They were both grappling with the other evil aliens, and had managed to knock out 2 of them with 2 to go. The man Michael had been grappling with had been done for when the fire knocked his hand aside. But, besides them, there were other problems.
Someone else was lying on the ground, and it wasn't one of the enemy. The body had short, curly blonde hair, and it wasn't moving. It was Tess.
Kyle held her in his arms. Liz had a hand on his shoulder and Alex was checking for a pulse. As Maria hurried over to them, Alex looked up and said, "She's gone."
When Michael used his powers to save Maria, he had knocked the gun to that it hit Tess, and now she was dead. Maria couldn't bring herself to be happy over anyone's death, not matter what they had done to her, but if anyone had to die instead of her, she was glad it was Tess.
Isabel came up, panting. She had disposed of most of the evil aliens, with the exception of the one that Max was still fighting. She hadn't realized what had happened over here.
"What's wrong with Tess?" Isabel asked, her eyebrows raised as she breathed heavily.
"She's dead," Maria said shortly, "The fire from the man's gun hit her when it was knocked away from me."
Isabel wore a stricken expression, but Maria wouldn't let her grieve when there were more important matters at hand. "Before anything else," Maria said insistently, "Michael needs your help."
Isabel tore her eyes away from Tess's still body, "What?"
"He's got a hole in his chest, even if it's not over a vital organ," Maria said grimly, "So you need to use your powers and manipulate his molecular structure to fill that hole."
Isabel gave her a panicked glance. "I've never done anything like that before. Only Max has ever healed someone when he saved Liz."
Maria pointed to Max who was still fighting with the last alien, "Well, he's busy. And, remember, there's a first time for everything. Michael's life likely depends on it."
Isabel nodded, "I'll do my best."
Her best better be enough to save his life, Maria thought grimly as they both walked over to Michael. Isabel knelt down on one side of him, Maria the other side.
"I hope this works Michael," Isabel said, trying to keep the fear out of her voice as she placed her hand over the hole in Michael's chest, "I don't want to lose you too."
There was a glowing as Isabel let her powers go to work. Maria watched anxiously as Isabel locked eyes with Michael and tried to heal him.
Isabel slowly lifted her hand. Michael's eyes fluttered shut, and Maria's heart leapt. But, she allowed herself to breath again when his eyes opened wide and he gave some semblance of a smile.
Grinning from ear to ear, she gathered him in her arms and refused to let go.
"I would be dead if it weren't for you," she said in an emotionally strained voice into his ear as she hugged him tight.
"Why the hell were you going after him?" Michael said, leaning back slightly, "He could have killed you so easily."
"I thought you were dead," Maria said quietly, "I wasn't thinking clearly, I just wanted to kill him in anyway I could."
"No more heroics," Michael said, stroking her cheek, "Promise me. I don't want you to die on my behalf."
"I promise," Maria said, crossing her fingers behind her back. If Michael was ever in danger again, she would do anything to save him.
As Michael leaned forward to hug her again, he looked past Maria to see Tess's still body cradled in Kyle's arms.
"Oh my God," he said, pulling away from Maria, his face turning paler than normal.
