Maria slowly opened her eyes. The sun which was already high in the sky, shone in through her bedroom window. She had fallen asleep late at night, and her alarm clock wasn't functional to wake her up.
She had spent time deciding whether or not to break and then burn the napkin holder that had come from Michael. Normally, if a guy had broken up with her she would violently destroy everything that was associated with him. But, this time it was different. It wasn't a normal break-up. He broke up with her because he loved her too much.
And besides, she had never been in love with any of the other guys either.
She kept the napkin holder.

Maria walked into the kitchen. Her mother sat at the table, drinking a cup of coffee in her housecoat.
"Maria," she said, yawning widely. "I've got to go to work right away, so I need a favor. Go get groceries. The list is on the fridge. And remember......"
"No brand names," Maria finished the sentence. "Yeah mom, I know. They are twice the price."
"You can take the car," Amy said, standing up. "I'll just walk. I meant to go to the store yesterday, but I just forgot."
"I'll go after breakfast mom," Maria said, pouring the cereal into the bowl. "I don't have to work at the Crashdown today anyway."

Maria sighed as she stood in line at the checkout. There were about a million people in front of her, and the girl at the till was a complete idiot. She had to have someone come help her twice already.
Maria leaned forward on the shopping cart, wishing she was anywhere but here. Well, nearly anywhere but here. She wanted to be back in her bedroom, doing more of the self-pity thing. Maybe when she got home, she could call Liz and they could do the whole sob-fest thing again.
The line moved forward about an inch and Maria groaned.
"Fancy meeting you here," a voice behind her said in a playful voice.
"Alex," Maria said turning around. "What are you doing here?"
"Sustanance," Alex said, holding up a shopping basket full of chips, pop and ice cream.
Maria raised her eyebrows, "Throwing a big party?"
Alex shook his head, "No, actually just two other people are invited. You, and Liz if she's feeling up to it."
"Alex...." Maria began, planning on telling him she just wasn't in the mood.
He cut her off, "Come on Maria. You can't do this forever. You need to come out of your shell here a little. Michael isn't a reason to hide out for the rest of your life. Besides, it'll be fun. I'll rent movies. And, guaranteed, all action. You two don't need any chick flicks to bring you all down again."
"Why not?" Maria shrugged. "I suppose it might not be that bad."
"Nice of you to have so much enthusiasm," Alex said dryly as they moved forward a step. "Isn't my presence enough to throw you into a frenzy?"
Maria just smiled and shook her head. "How can you be such a great guy Alex? Michael isn't even fit to kiss the ground you walk on. In fact, I don't see why you ever went after Isabel, she doesn't deserve you."
"I know that," Alex kidded, trying to hide his blush, "Why do you think I broke up with her? You know, all those babes at school are just lining up to be with me."
"At least you got out before you got in too deep," Maria said, referring to his break-up with Isabel.
"I haven't magically stopped caring about her," Alex informed Maria as she finally reached the front of the line. "I just knew that she would tell me to get lost if I didn't go myself. And, it would be best if we parted on good, mutually agreeable terms."
"At least we have you all to ourselves again," Maria said as she unloaded the groceries onto the checkout turnstyle.
As Maria set the box of generic cereal onto the turnstyle, she saw the doors to the store slide open across from her. With the light behind him, Michael entered the store, his spiky hair mussed from the breeze outside.
Vaguely, she heard Alex say some thing in the background, but she didn't hear him. Her eyes were focused on the man in front of her. He didn't even notice her as he grabbed a shopping basket from the stack. She wished she had paid more attention to when he came to buy food for his place so she wouldn't have been here, faced with him.
When she had accepted that he didn't want it to work, she had never known it would be this hard. It wasn't as if he was just dropping off the face of the planet. He would live here in Roswell, same as before, and she would be faced with the sight of him every day. Except, she couldn't have anything to do with him.
School was going to be torture when it started.
But, she would stay away. She wouldn't even acknowledge his presence. She would pretend he didn't exist. She would pretend her heart still didn't flutter whenever she saw him, and pretend that she didn't care. She would give him what he wanted.
"You better buy a lot of ice cream for tonight," she told Alex as she handed the cashier her money.
