Maria sat beside Michael on the bed in his apartment. Since they had left the gym she had refused to leave his side. She was afraid that if she took his eyes off him for one second, he would disappear.

She was also the only human there. Neither Max nor Isabel felt comfortable going to get Liz or Alex, and Maria refused to leave Michael. Funny thing was, nobody had even mentioned going to get Tess.

"I'm fine," Michael assured them as Isabel and Maria hovered. "Really."

"We thought we were going to lose you," Isabel said, not managing to keep the tears out of her voice.

"Well, you didn't," he said, "So stop worrying and explain to me what happened while I was burning up in that room thingy."

Max was the one who answered. "To sum it up, a friend of Topolsky's from the FBI came and shot the evil alien. He's the one who gave you the second communicator stone. He left though."

Michael just nodded, taking it all in stride. The reality of his near death really hadn't hit him. Actually, all he wanted was for Max and Isabel to leave.

"Since you know how to end the dreams," he said pointedly to Max, "Shouldn't you be going to find Tess?"

Max shrugged, "Eventually. It's not like I'm planning on going to sleep soon."

Isabel wasn't quite as thick-headed as Max. "Why don't you go now? You can drop me off somewhere on your way. Michael probably needs to rest and all."

He didn't really, but Michael wasn't going to argue if it got Max out of there. As the brother and sister made their way out, Maria reluctantly stood up. "I should be going," she said, "You're fine now and everything."

"Wait Maria," he said, grabbing her arm. "We need to talk."

"What's there to talk about?" she asked, playing innocent.

"You kissed me Maria, when I was dying. You are the reason I'm alive right now, the reason I came back. That's something to talk about." he didn't mention the excited stream of kisses she had laid on his face after he awoke.

"So I did," that was all Maria said, averting her eyes from his. She sat down beside him again on the bed.

When it became apparent she wasn't going to say anything else, Michael started, "Listen, I know you thought I was going to die. If the kisses meant nothing, I understand. I mean, you never thought I'd wake up."

"You're right I didn't," again, that was all Maria said. When she didn't continue, Michael became frustrated.

"Listen," he said. "If this whole thing meant nothing, fine. I just want to know. Tell me what's going on inside your head Maria, it's never been a problem before."

"I wasn't thinking about what those kisses meant when I gave them," she said finally. "You were dying Michael, and I had to face the thought of never seeing or speaking to you again. And, you want to know what? I didn't know how to handle it. I'm not going to pretend that I wouldn't probably be still pissed off at you if you hadn't lain near death. But, I don't want to worry about that. I don't want to face a lifetime without you. I'm still angry for what you did to me, but I forgive you now."

"You want to try 'us' again?" Michael asked.

She nodded, "I wanted to get over you, but I'm still in love with you, and I can't make the feeling go away. But, if you ever hurt me like that again, I'll rip your eyeballs out."

On that cheery note, he leaned over and kissed her gently on the lips. As he pulled back slightly he whispered, "I never will."

Max stood outside Liz's window. After dropping of Isabel, he had found himself coming straight here. He didn't want to see Tess, he wanted to see Liz.

She was sitting on her bed, writing in her journal. As he knocked, her head flew up, and she got an angry look on her face.

She stalked over to the window and crawled out to stand beside him. "I don't want to see you." she said simply.

"I'm not having the dreams about Tess anymore," he said quickly, to placate her.

"So?" she said, crossing her arms across her chest.

"So, I want us to get back together," he said, shrugging. "That was the problem between us wasn't it?"

"You can be so dense at times," Liz said shaking her head. "No Max, that wasn't why I was mad. I understood they were beyond your control. I'm mad that you lied to me."

"I'm sorry about that too," he said insistently. "I just didn't want you to be hurt."

"So you decided to lie instead? Tell me Max, which way do you think hurt me more?" Liz said angrily.

"I'm not saying I was right," Max said. "I'm just explaining to you my reasoning. I love you Liz, and I never want to hurt you. I swear, I'll never lie to you again, even if the truth is worse."

"And you expect me to forgive you, just like that?" Liz asked.

"No, I don't expect it," Max said simply, "But I'd really like it if you would. It would save me a lot of groveling over the next week."

"Well," Liz said with a sigh, "I suppose I forgive you, but I still expect plenty of groveling."

"Yes ma'am," Max said with a wide grin, grabbing her and spinning her in his arms.

Alex Whitman walked up to his front steps. He had been over at Liz's, watching movies. They had called Maria's and got no answer.

He looked up to see Isabel sitting on the front stoop. Alex stopped short. She raised her head from gazing at her shoes. "Hi Alex," she said quietly.

"What are you doing here?" he asked. It wasn't a mean voice. He was just tired of being angry with her anymore. He just wanted not to care.

"I came to talk to you," she said, standing up.

"So talk," he said, not walking towards her. "Although I don't know what we have left to say to each other."

"I want you back," she said abruptly.

"Isn't that the title of a stupid 'N Sync song?" Alex said, walking by her to his front door.

"Please Alex," Isabel said, "Please don't shut me out. I tried to stay away, I did, but I can't. I need you, and I won't give up. Tonight, Michael almost died, and I realized life is too short. I'm not leaving her until you take me back."

"I'm not willing to risk being hurt like that," Alex said, digging his house key out of his pocket. "I know you feel bad, but when you're dreaming of another man, I don't think I can handle it."

"I'm not dreaming of another man," Isabel said.

"I thought you couldn't control the dreams?" Alex said, "That's what you've been telling me all along."

Isabel sighed, "It's a long story, but we've gotten rid of the dreams Alex. They're gone, for good. Michael and I won't dream of each other ever again."

Alex didn't say anything, and didn't turn around. But, his hand halted on the doorknob and he didn't go in. Isabel felt her eyes start to water. She squeezed them shut to hold in the moisture.

"I'll go if you still want me to," she said in a broken voice. "But, I love you Alex. I'm sorry I was never strong enough to hold back in the dreams. You have no idea how sorry I am that I risked what we shared together. If you still can't forgive me, or don't think I'm worth the risk, I'll walk out of your life forever."

She felt a single tear excape her closed eyelids. Her eyes opened in surprise as she felt a hand wipe it away. Alex stood in front of her. She hadn't even heard him come up.

"I don't know what to say," he said.

"Say you'll give us another chance," Isabel said fiercely. "Say it's not too late."

"Okay," Alex said, gathering her into his arms, "It's not too late, and I'm more than willing to give us another chance."
