Isabel's nails dug into Michael's arms, but he didn't even notice as the woman rose. She was transparent. Sort of like a ghost, or a hologram.

She was normal looking. Her hair was long and blonde like Isabel's. She didn't look threatening, or evil. The woman was wearing clothes that, although they were unlike anything Michael had seen on earth before, were not outrageously different.

When the woman saw them standing there, her eyes focused in on Isabel, and she broke into a wide smile. Michael didn't take his eyes off the woman, mesmerized by her.

"Isabel," the woman said, her voice full of emotion. She raised her hand to her mouth as if holding back sobs.

Isabel didn't say anything, just opened her mouth and closed it. No sound came out. When she finally made a sound, it was barely above a whisper. "Mother," Isabel said, so softly that Michael wouldn't have heard her if he hadn't been standing right there.

The woman nodded, smiling tremulously. "Oh God, I thought I'd never see you again."

Isabel couldn't respond. She was staring at her real mother whom she had never seen before. Her blood mother.

"You are so beautiful," the woman said. In this time she had never left the spot where she stood. "I never thought that I'd see you like this again."

"Again?" Isabel croaked, not knowing what to say.

Her mother hesitated, "There'll be time for that later. I have so much to tell you. Where is your brother?"

"He's not with us," Michael said, finally speaking.

Her eyes turned to him as if seeing him for the first time. "Michael, my God. This is just so surreal. I'm glad to see that you all have found each other. But, of course you have. You have the stones and I'm standing here aren't I?"

"I have so many questions for you," Isabel said, walking past Michael. "I mean, who are we? Where do we come from? What exactly is going on?"

The woman gave a sad smile. "Well, our race doesn't have a home planet at the moment. We travel around, evading out enemies."

"Why not?" Isabel asked curiously.

Her mother sighed. "Most of our race was destroyed by the attack. Many people died in that first battle, including you all."

"Excuse me?" Michael burst out, "What are you talking about, 'us all'? Last time I checked, we were still alive. Plus, we weren't born until we crashed on this planet."

She shook her head, "I don't know exactly how to tell you this, but you are not really you. I mean, you are but....it's complicated. On our planet, you were all the protectors of our world. When you died in that first battle, we thought all was lost. But, we cloned your essence and added some human DNA, sending you to earth. You are meant to destroy many of the enemy race that are stationed there on earth."

Neither Michael nor Isabel said anything, and the woman sighed, "I know this is a lot to grasp, and we don't have much time here. This communication can't last long, otherwise we will be tracked."

She gave a smile, "So, have either the two of you or Tess and Max had your child yet? Procreate to produce more warriors to defend us?"

Isabel took a few steps closer, "That's another question we have. Those dreams were having, we want them to stop. We don't want to have a baby with each other, we don't care about each other in that way."

The woman sighed, "You've found human mates."

Michael nodded, "Yeah, we have. How do we get rid of these stupid dreams."

She hesitated, "What about the procreation? I mean, only descendants from the four of you have the powers to destroy the enemy."

Isabel shook her head, "We can do that on our own if we have to, just please tell us how to stop these dreams. It feels unnatural between us. Michael is more like a brother to me than a mate."

The woman sighed and nodded. "Fine, I suppose what's to be must be. To get rid of these dream, simply join hands and think really hard about how much you want the dreams to stop. It's not hard."

Michael and Isabel didn't waste any time. They joined hands. Michael concentrated solely on how much he loved Maria, and how much these dreams disrupted his life. He felt nothing but a slight tingling in his hands.

"There, it is done," the woman said with a smile. "No more dreams."

Michael looked up in surprise, "That's it?"

She nodded, "That's it."

"When will you come here for us?" Isabel asked her mother. "When will we get to be with our people."

The woman squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head. "We won't be coming for you," she said in a quiet voice. "That would endanger our lives, and yours, too much. Maybe one day, when the enemy has been completely destroyed, but it would be risky even then."

"We won't ever see you again?" Isabel asked.

"No," her mother said in a strangled voice. "This is a one time communication, simply to let you know your mission on earth. That's why I so hoped your brother would be here."

"What about my parents? My family?" Michael demanded, why were Isabel and Max's parents the ones they had to talk to.

The woman turned to him with a sympathetic look. "I'm so sorry Michael," she said quietly, "Your and Tess's parents, they died in that first attack along with your whole family. There's no one left."

Michael shut his eyes, trying to ward off the pain. He had to turn away from Isabel and her mother. They were gone, all of them. His last hope for a family, for parents to love him was gone. Not only was he alone on this planet, he was alone in the whole universe.

Isabel walked up to her mother. "You can't just leave us here alone. You're our mother, our real mother! These few minutes won't be enough."

The woman shook her head, "I can't come for you Isabel, no matter how much I want to be with you and your brother. This is hurting me as much as it hurts you. Whether you are clones or not, you are still my children! Because of that, I won't endanger your lives. For every moment longer I even keep the communication going, it puts your life in danger. The enemy will be finding it easier and easier to track the communication."

Isabel reached out her hand, wanting to touch the mother she had never known. The woman shook her head, "Don't even try that Isabel."

Isabel ignored her and stuck out her hand. It went right through her mother. "I told you," the woman said sadly, "We can't touch each other. My body is really on a ship hurtling through space. I'm not really there."

"I can't even hug you, not once?" Isabel said in an anguished voice. "I can't even do that."

Her mother just shook her head. "I'm sorry it has to be this way, I'm sorry I can't do anything about it. Basically Isabel, I'm sorry for everything. This isn't making it any easier."

The woman sighed and looked at the two of them, "I have to leave," she said gently. "The safe time for us to communicate is up."

"Please don't leave me," Isabel pleaded, wanting to grab the woman's hand and keep her there.

Her mother shook her head, "I must go."

They all whirled around at the sound of someone entering the gymnasium. Max stood there, looking it to kill.

"You stole the stone from my room," he fumed at Michael, "Why the hell didn't you tell me what was going on? You can't just can't keep going behind my back like this Michael!"

He stalked across the gym floor, but pulled up short when he saw the woman standing there. "Max," Isabel said softly, "Meet our mother."

Max stood there in shock. The blonde woman wore an expression of extreme joy as she looked at her son. "Max," was all she said.

"Just stay awhile longer," Isabel asked her desperately.

"I've already stayed too long," the woman said in a disparaging voice, her eyes never leaving Max. "I've already put all of us in danger."

"He's you son," Isabel said simply.

Max walked toward them, slowly. "Mom?" he said, his voice breaking. It was like a question.

She nodded. "Maxwell," she said, her voice full of joy. "I didn't think I'd get to see you before I go."

"Before you go?" he said in an uncertain voice, reaching the point where Isabel stood.

Their mother nodded, "Yes Maxwell, I must go. I've stayed with you too long already. I've explained it all to Michael and Isabel, they can tell it all to you."

"But I just got here," Max said in a desperate voice, "I just got here. I haven't been able to talk to you. I want to know what's going on."

She shook her head, "You'll understand when they fill you in. Every second longer I stay puts everyone in great danger. Trust me Max, I must go."

She raised her hand to her face as a single tear escaped, "I'm just glad I got to see both my babies before I go."

"You can't leave," Max said, a wild look in his eyes, "Not yet not ever."

Again, his mother shook her head. Her apparition had already begun to fade. "I must."

"No," Max said desperately, holding out a hand to touch her. But, like Isabel's, it passed straight through the astral projections.

"Just remember, I love you both with all my heart." those were the last words they heard before she faded from the gym completely.

The glowing stones rose in the air again. They knocked into each other, and fell straight to the ground. They were unmoving, and plain. Even the symbols had faded from the rocks.

Isabel burst out crying. They were violent, heart-wrenching sobs. Max put his arms sround her, and held her as she let them out. He too let a few tears escape, and when he turned from her to Michael, there was a wetness on his face.

"How could you do this to me Michael?" he demanded angrily. "How could you do this? You stole that stone from me, and didn't even tell me you were trying something. Now, thanks to you, I don't get to talk to my real mother whom I'll never see again."

"It wasn't on purpose," Michael said in a tense voice, "We didn't try to keep things from you on purpose. I thought this was going to fail, just like it did outside the library. If I thought there was a chance in hell that we would end up talking to your mother, we would have told you right away."

"Sure," Max said sarcastically. "I know you're jealous, but why did you try to deny me the right to see my mother."

"I didn't know!" Michael all but screamed back.

Max advanced angrily on Michael, but Isabel stepped in between them, putting her hands on Max's chest to subdue him. "Stop," she said angrily, "Just stop it Max. I took the stone from your room, not Michael. God, do actually think he did this on purpose?"

"The thought occured to me," Max said tersely, still staring at Michael.

"He just learned his whole family is dead!" Isabel exclaimed. "For crying out loud Max, this isn't any easier on him than it is on us."

They were interrupted by someone laughing and making Tsk, tsk noises. A man, around their age, came into view. His had dark hair and wore a black suit with a red t-shirt.

"My, my," he said in a mocking voice, "Problems in the ranks?"
