Max just stared silently at the two for a moment. Isabel shifted nervously as she watched Max. She couldn't read his reaction, couldn't tell what was going on inside his head.
"Would you please repeat that?" Max finally asked in a quiet voice, "I don't think I heard you right."
Michael sighed, "It's the truth Max. She's pregnant and I'm the father."
"I see," Max said in a deadly voice. "You're pregnant."
He closed his eyes for a moment, and then exploded, "What the hell were you thinking! How in the hell could you do this?"
Isabel shook her head, "It's not like that Max. You don't...."
"I don't what Isabel?" Max replied, "What's there to see? You two slept together. God, no matter which way you look at it, it's just ignorant. Let's start with the obvious matter of the fact you just conceived an alien baby. Then there's the matter of the two humans whose hearts you just broke. There are a millions other reasons why it was so stupid."
"We didn't mean for this to happen," Isabel began.
Max shook his head, "Nobody ever means to get pregnant, it's just one of those consequences that can come from having sex."
Michael shook his head, "It's not like we chose to sleep together."
Max threw up his arms, "Excuse me? I mean, how did you not have a choice?"
Tess finally spoke quietly, "How did you find out that you were pregnant Isabel?"
Isabel looked at her, "Well, I suspected, so I took some of those home pregnancy tests. They confirmed it."
"When you said you didn't have a choice," Tess continued, "Were you saying that because you didn't actually sleep together in real life?"
Michael nodded, wondering how she knew.
Tess sighed, "I was wondering if you two were having the dreams too, obviously you were. Yours have just advanced a little faster."
"How do you know about the dreams?" Isabel demanded.
"It's something we all experience," Tess explained.
"What are you talking about?" Michael exclaimed, "What do you mean 'we all experience them'?"
Tess sighed, "It's simple Michael. We all have dreams about our pre-destined mating partner. Intense dreams. I was dreaming about Max, but I wasn't sure about the 2 of you yet."
"You mean you were having dreams like that about Tess?" Michael said to Max, turning to him, "And you never told us?"
Max was red. Technically, all he was thinking about was that Tess had been having the same explicit dreams as him. He cleared his throat. "Come on Michael, you never told me. Plus, ours never... never got that far. And, Isabel is the one pregnant, not Tess."
"She might be eventually," Michael replied, "It's not like we have control over the dreams."
Tess shook her head. "It doesn't work like that Michael." she turned to Isabel, "Have you two slept together besides in her dreams."
"God no," Isabel said adamantly. "It was just in our sleep. Michael and I are not involved in that way, and we're not going to be."
Tess sighed, "Okay, then it's simple. You're not pregnant Isabel."
"But the tests..." Isabel began, trying to point out that they had turned up positive.
Tess shook her head, "No, we don't get pregnant from the dreams. It's not biologically possible in humans or aliens. That's not the purpose of the dreams. You see, they tell us who we are meant to be with for life. And, they push us towards each other. It's easier to do once you have intense dreams about it. It also allows your body to become ready for it. Isabel, those tests made for humans are faulty. All they are telling you is that your body is ready to procreate with Michael."
"Then there's hope right?" Michael said, a lift in his voice, daring to believe there was a chance that this wasn't happening, "I mean, it's not like we are going to do it in real life. We just won't do it."
Tess sighed and shook her head, "It's not that easy Michael. They'll get even more intense and you won't be able to stay away from each other. It will happen eventually."
"No it won't," Isabel shaking her head firmly at Tess, "We've got more willpower than that. We don't have to sleep together."
"Eventually...."Tess insisted.
Max cut her off, "I agree. We can stop this. We don't have to do it. We're stronger than our biological urges. We're not going to betray the ones we care about."
Tess gave up and shook her head, resigned. "We'll try our best," was all she said. "We'll try our best."
"What do we tell the other 3?" Isabel asked, "I mean Alex, Maria and Liz."
Michael shrugged, "The truth. All of it. I vote we don't tell them about Tess or Max though. We've already hurt 2 people, no need to hurt Liz too. We just tell them that it's happened to Isabel and I. It's up to them if they will take us back."
