My'ria'h's StoryMy'ria'h K'amm

My name is My'ria'h K'amm...and I am alone.  There was a time when I might have thought myself lucky, when I thought that I deserved no friends or family.  But I was wrong.

He was the best thing that had ever happened to me.  He was the only one who had ever really cared.  And he was the only one that I had ever loved.  But he is gone now...thanks to my ignorance, my foolishness, and my selfishness.

Batman.  The love of my life.  My husband.  At one time.  Now he is no more.  His life is forfeit, thanks to me.  I destroyed him, because I no longer wished to be the Martian I was.  Now, I am human and alone.  Powerless, helpless...hopeless.

Should I just give up?  Is life even worth living anymore?  I shall let you decide.  This is my story.

I was born a slave to a creature called Apollyon.  My parents sold me to him, actually, just after I was born.  They sold me for...well...intergalactic herbs.  Apollyon was all I ever knew.  He treated me like...like his girlfriend, as humans would call it.  In some sick, twisted way...he may have actually loved me.  To spare you the grueling details, he was far too...kind...some of the time, while other times he would take his anger out on me, whether I was the cause of it or not.

Soon, I learned a new master.  Apollyon's brother, Vaxcon, came to visit him.  He seemed strange, and lugged a strange creature around, the likes of which I had never seen.  Vaxcon explained to Apollyon that the creature was his slave, something called a human.  I felt sorry for the poor creature, knowing what being a slave was like.  I felt sorry for it, and even tried to communicate with it.

Surprisingly, the creature was very bright.  I could barely believe it, talking to it like any sort of what Apollyon would call "civilized" (any creature of his kind) creature would talk.  The human told me his name was Thomas Wayne, and that he had a wife and son back on Vaxcon's Human Slave Farm.  I shuddered at the thought of such a thing, and told Thomas that I would try to do something to help him.  What I did not know at the time was that my chance would come very soon.

Vaxcon kidnapped me and took me back to his planet.  He made me into his slave, and treated me even worse than Apollyon had.  To Apollyon, I was a lover.  To Vaxcon, I was an inferior pet.

But I was treated far better than the humans were treated.  Humans were to Vaxcon the lowest possible creatures.  They were barely good enough to even be called slaves.  But these creatures fascinated me.  They were resilient, intelligent, and had strong spirits.  They formed a hidden resistance against Vaxcon, headed by none other than Thomas Wayne.

Thomas and I became close friends.  He introduced me to his wife, Martha, and his son, Bruce.  Bruce was the most darling young boy, strong for his age, and very smart.  He never complained, which was good since it reduced his beatings, but bad because he was accepting everything that Vaxcon was doing to him and his family.  I loved the small boy and regarded him almost as my own son.  Thomas saw this and told me that if anything ever happened to him and Martha, I was to look after Bruce.  The irony of that statement was...the time for me to care for the boy would come sooner than anyone could have anticipated.

One night, after an extremely terrible day with many beatings for the entire Wayne family, I was helping Thomas come up with an escape plan so that he and his family could leave.  I was to keep Vaxcon busy while Thomas, Martha, and Bruce stole one of his ships and escaped.  When I left the slaves' quarters, Vaxcon took me to one of the...interrogation rooms.  Somehow he knew we were planning something...somehow...

The only thing I can think of is that someone sold us out.  Who, I could not say.  But someone must have told Vaxcon that we were planning something.  I was tortured severely, my will utterly destroyed, but still I refused to tell Vaxcon what he wanted to know.  So he took the information from my mind.  And then, the unthinkable happened.

Vaxcon had the Waynes brought to him and beat the three of them severely.  Chained to the wall as I was, I had no way of knowing how to help them.  Then, Vaxcon had his laser gun brought to him and...to spare the excruciating details, he shot both Thomas and Martha Wayne.

It was more than I could take.  I pulled at my restraints and finally broke free.  But rather than attacking Vaxcon or trying to revive my friends whom I knew were dead, I grabbed eight-year-old Bruce Wayne and escaped.  I escaped Vaxcon's fortress and flew away as fast as I could, determined to protect this young boy who had just been forced to witness his parents' deaths.

For two months, I kept him hidden far out of Vaxcon's reach.  The boy was hysterical, in the half-aware world of extreme grief.  I did all I could to make him comfortable and to protect him.  But it was inevitable that we would one day be found and recaptured.  All I was doing was delaying that which we both knew would happen.

The boy was very grateful and showed his gratitude in a loving way.  He was like a son to me, and I wanted to save him from the life of torture and hard work that I knew was waiting for him.  On the night I tried to escape, we were captured.  Bruce Wayne was taken from me, and I have never seen him sense.

Now, I am on Earth on a mission for my master, Vaxcon.  My mission is simple: to destroy the Batman.  And yet, this order is one that will be nearly impossible for me to carry out.  I cannot do this.  I have been with Batman for nearly three months now, and have learned his true identity: Bruce Wayne.  The same child I sheltered for two months, the same child I have sworn to protect.  And now, I find myself at an impasse.  I cannot kill him, but if I do not, my master will.  And any death I give him would be far less painful than any Vaxcon would inflict.

So my decision is a simple one.  I plan to spend as much time as I can with this wonderful friend of mine, to bide my time until my master comes looking for me.  And when that day comes, I will do everything possible to save his life.  But if I should fail...what then?
