Jennifer Jinx
Jenn doesn't remember much about her early childhood.
She remembers playing in the snow and a little bit about her mother. She doesn't
even remember her name though. She was taken at an early age to the temple.
Apparently the birthmark she has over her heart bore some importance to the
monks of this temple. She was taught from her first day how to sit properly and
speak properly.
After
a while they brought her the flame of purity to care for. It was a relic of the
temple that was very old. They said that the goddess herself gave it to the
monks a very long time ago. It didn't look very special, a single white
candlestick in a gold candleholder. But the flame was always lit and it was a
almost clear light blue color. And she discovered as she dropped it on herself
for the first time that it didn't burn her either.
She
could hold her hand right in the flame and it didn’t burn her. She was told
that this was because she was pure of heart and of body and she had to remain so
to care for the flame. So became her celibacy.
She
wasn't allowed to talk to the travelers that came in, and not very much to the
other people living in the temple. Solely the monk in charge of the temple
taught her. She grew up learning how to carry the flame and about its history.
The thing had something of a disturbing history.
Apparently
the flame burns anything that isn't pure. It doesn't go out until the corrupted
is gone entirely. It was used in the past to burn down houses and sometimes even
whole villages for the corruption of those that lived there. And sometimes they
even burned people at the stake with it.
She
wasn't entirely comfortable carrying around something with such a dark history
but she did as she was told. One night as she slept in her cell, how aptly they
call them cells, she knocked the flame over as she slept. Pure hands didn’t
make the desk next to her bed because it went up.
The
fire spread to the curtains and then to the bed. Because the flame did not
affect her, she didn't notice until she hit the ground with a thud. She got up
and tried to get out but they kept her under lock and key. So she tried to put
out the flames now spreading across the walls, it was even burning the brick.
It
seems pure people did not build the temple. As the flames began crawling up the
temple walls she realized she could not put them out. She started yelling for
help. No one came until they saw the flames themselves.
The
monk in charge hurried to her room and unlocked her door.
"What
have you done child!" he demanded of her.
She
told him it must have fallen over when she was sleeping. And that she couldn't
get it to go out.
"Of
course not, once the fire is started it can only be put out at its source.” He
told her to pick up the flame and then roughly grabbed her arm dragging her
outside the temple.
The
fire was out of control now; some people were running out in flames falling to
the ground to burn to their deaths. She had to do something.
She
looked up at the monk,” If I put this out the fire will go out, right?"
He
glared down at her, "Yes but you are not to do that, the flame must not be
lost, once it is out it can't be relit."
She
bit her lip and looked to the flame and then back at him. She couldn't let these
people burn. She quickly yanked her arm out of his hand and ran towards the
temple. More people were streaming out with flames engulfing them. She tried
blowing the flame out but that didn't work, then she pinched the wick. It went
out with a sizzle. The flames engulfing everything winked out too.
The
monk ran up to her and slapped her to the ground, "What have you done you
ignorant child? That was a very sacred relic. Not to just be snapped out by a
girl. I will deal with you in a bit."
He
beckoned two of the other monks to keep watch over her as he conferred with the
rest. He came back and whispered into the ear of the one monk who whispered in
the ear to the one next to him. She was yanked to her feet and walked over to a
large rock. She was told to kneel in front of the rock and rest her arms over
it. She did as she was told as she always did.
She
doesn't know how long the flogging lasted. She cried twice as they whipped her,
calling out once to please stop. She doesn't know when they stopped and yanked
her to her feet again. She winced as her back straightened and sagged limply
between the two monks.
The
head monk came to stand before her, "Jennifer Jinx, you are to remove
yourself from our presence, we must never see you again. Is this
understood?" She nodded feebly and lost consciousness again.
When
she awoke she was laying in an inn in the city called Moonglow. She got up and
found 1000 gold in her pack along with some bandages. She moved slowly as her
back hurt very much. She needed new clothes… hers were threadbare. She walked
around looking for the tailor shop and found a bulletin.
The
notice bore a royal seal. It stated that a Queen by the name of
Shieba needed servants. Perhaps she could be of use there. She kept that in
mind, jotting down the pigeon box she needed to reach.
She bought herself a plain
dress and a shirt in a hue of light purple and found her pigeon to send.
She felt the need to start her life over again and not think about what happened
too much.
She met a man named
Xarst and then his daughter Kay Leigh Dawn, who took her to the castle where she
began her service to the queen.
She has done her best to hide her past, thinking that if anyone found out she would just continue to be pushed away.
