Punk-O-Rama Tour w/ MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES / GUTTERMOUTH / BIGWIG / a few more... November 16, 2002 Emo's - Austin, TX This became another one of those shows that I got off work in San Antonio at 6:30 and had to race up to Austin, but this time I got some tickets online to be extra cautious. So I went up there with my friends Joel and Morgan, and it was strange when we first got there Morgan recognized someone he knew from the Army, so we were hanging out with him, and he had a Souls shirt on so he was alright in my book. We got there a little bit late, lucky for us the opening band of the outside stage was finishing up. The band was Simple Plan, and they were the same old generic pop punk garbage. And they were Canadians too, well I guess that's ok, but they're music still made me gag. The next band was who I really came to see, Bigwig. As expected they put on a hardcore show and rocked the place down. The confusion on the looks of the 15 year old girls who were there to see Simple Plan and Nerf Herder was priceless. It was kind of strange though, they definitely had a new drummer and the guitarist looked different from when I last saw them too. The new drummer had new drums too, which was a change from the duct taped piece of shit kit the old one had, even though he was awesome. Oh, and the guitarist and drummer were chugging a bottle of Jagermeister between songs, if that's not hardcore I don't know what is. The played a great set, and everytime I have seen them I have danced so hard that I hurt for days. The next band was Guttermouth, who I have some albums of but haven't really listened to. These guys are some characters. The singer looked a lot like Jimmy Fallon and had this hideous moustache, imagine John Waters crossed with Adolf Hitler. He was extrememly drunk and kept running around the stage grabbing his nuts and stuff. The music was good old early 90's skate punk, mixed with their newer stuff that's a little more poppy. At one point this kid got on the stage, he was probably about 13 or something. Anyway he had one of those "faux-hawk" deal haircuts, I guess that's in style now or something. So the singer keeps him onstage, points right in his face and starts screaming "You fucking little piece of shit! Why don't you grow a real mohawk?" He does this until the kid flips him off and then he physically moves the kid back into the crowd. That was great, then some other girl was yelling something about wanting to do the singer in the ass, so he gets down on all fours, brings her up and starts saying "Well, you can talk the talk, now where's your strap-on?." It turns out to be this fat girl in plaid bondage pants, so he's like "Oh no! This girl is so punk in her Hot Topic bondage pants! Look out!". Anyway, she ends up hitting him in the balls so he laid on the ground for a while. It was pretty comical. The headliner was the Bosstones, and truthfully they became very boring very fast. It was funny to see all of them trying to maneuver on such a small stage, even their dancer was out there. So we ended up leaving during them, boredom had set in. One other thing that was funny was we were talking to these high school girls, and this guy we were with that had the Souls shirt just started tearing into them about how much Texas sucked as a state. He ended up scaring them away, too. Well, it was a fun show, as expected and you should go check out this tour if you get the chance....just make sure Bigwig is playing.
