| Make Your Own Climbing Wall |
| Making your own climbing wall may not be as hard as you think. If fact, it is somewhat easy, if you have the time, the tools, and the money. I am going to show you how to make a climbing wall out of concrete. (I may do a climbing wall with wood later) I am turning an old grain silo into a climbing wall. This grain silo was built around 1890 for grain storage. Now, this 40 foot tower stands dormant...for now. I am working on turning this thing into a climbing wall. I am using 1/2 inch thick by 1 1/2 inch long concrete anchors by putting them into holes that I have drilled in the inside of the silo. The concrete is 3 inches thick, I am only drilling 1 inch into the concrete, this way the wall won't lose too much strength. First, I am going to talk about and explain how to place a concrete anchor into a concrete (or rock) wall. It isn't that hard, provided you have the right tools. First, you are going to have to have an electric drill (most any kind will work), a diamond drill bit, the number of concrete anchors you want (based on the number of holds you want), bolts (same number as anchors), and a wrench. Directions: 1. Drill hole(s) in concrete where anchor needs to be placed. Make sure the anchor sits in the hole loosely, but not enough that is can move too freely. You need the anchor to be able to slide in and out easily, but it shouldn't wriggle around. 2. Now, after hole is drilled, place the anchor in it, and tighten lightly. Make sure the anchor does not move. 3. Place bolt trough the hold you want placed. 4. Then, screw the bolt into the anchor, pinching the hold between the wall, and the bolt head. Make sure hold does not move. 5. Tighten completely. 6. Repeat until wall is done. 7. Climb Some quick reminders: Make sure that you get the same size bolts as anchors. Also make sure that the anchor is inset into the wall, or else it will restrict the hold from touching the wall. More Innovations: To make a wall with pre-set anchors for quick draws and lead climbing, like you would find on a real wall, use an "eye bolt" (below) in place of a hold. (Use this method only for a home gym) |
