Synopsis

If you've heard my ranting on this before, you'll probably have an idea...

For those of you who haven't and don't, and those who didn't listen (I wouldn't have listened to me either if I were you) here it is... If you saw anything nearer the end of season eight of the X-files, you'll probably understand some of this... hopefully.

First of all, we have the government. The old conspiracy shit is true, though they do a fair job of hiding it. The government holds knowledge of many underground operations, from passage of illegal goods to plots formed by outside groups. They keep many of these quiet in their own interest... Many of these people honestly don't give a damn about the citizens of America. They have their own interest in hand, as well as the interest of their government setup. To them, this is first and foremost.

One of the subjects that the government has kept hidden from the world is the discovery of alien life forms. They know very minimal details; basically that the aliens exist and aren't all friendly towards the government(would you be, though?). They have pushed back any sign of alien life that they have discovered so far, figuring that they don't want the aliens near the American people, partly because they don't want to have any blame put on them if anything should go wrong. The stronger reason is that they want the knowledge to themselves, so that they can have more power. To do that, they need time to find out more about the aliens, without being overly obtrusive. Because they know very little, they believe that no one else knows anything aside from tales told by the usual unreliable sources who report to have seen UFOs.

This, however, is vastly untrue. The members of a group that knows that the government is hiding something know more about the aliens than the government does. They've begun to band together to fin out everything they can about what the government is hiding and to expose it if needed. These crusaders began to call their group The Existance.

The members of The Existance consist mostly of government agents, ex-government agents, or specialists who have had some sort of dealing with the government. A few have no government experience, but are easily able to grasp the ideas they need to understand. The Existance is a well-bonded, strong organization, built on loyalty and mutual disdain for the government.

One other aspects ties the members of The Existance together. The group is in league with the aliens. About half of the members of the group know this when the IF starts; the other half is fairly clueless. The ones that do know are fine with it.

The member of The Existance are sick of the government. The aliens dislike the government for its underhanded methods. In short, the aliens and The Existance both feel the need to get rid of the tyranny in the government offices. They feel that if this can be accomplished, much more will follow. People will know the whole story. Aliens wouldn't have to be treated so poorly, or resort to violence to win anything over.

So they say...

However, a deal has been compromised. The aliens and The Existance have agreed to either leave each other alone, or to work together. Both have agreed to provide help if it is ever needed... Unless, of course, the circumstances and reasons are ridiculous.

The aliens have provided an opportunity for the members of The Existance. They will provide for any member who wishes a chance to become one of them... in a sense. The member would be given an operation to replace one of his or her vertebra with a specially designed, indestructible steel one. In addition, some of the patient's normal body fluids would be replaced with an alien fluid. Together, the vertebra and the spinal cord would allow the patient's body to rebuild itself if it were destroyed or harmed. In effect, it would allow the patient to heal whatever wounds he or she might find themselves afflicted with.

The person would become a human/alien hybrid. The real differences between the aliens and the hybrids, however, are quite simple. First, the aliens are genderless, though all look like male. Don't ask how they reproduce... O_o The other difference is that, while the hybrid have one metal vertebra, alien fluids, and some oft thier own body fluids, the aliens have a complete metal spinal, and their body fluids are completely composed of the sort they inject into the humans who become hybrids. This enables the aliens to 'return from the dead' more quickly than the hybrids.

Just a bit more about they hybrids. The operations started about a year and a half before this IF takes place... For anyone who cares, about eight years before the end of season eight. The operations in the first six or seven months were much different from the ones in the months after. These operations involved operating on the patient, then sending him or her back to the Earth, where he or she would be presumably 'dead'. Eventually, however, he or she would shed his or her skin and, in doing so, become a full hybrid. This involved much more pain and time than the new procedures. It also required more vertebrate. The operations started with four, and progressed downward until the number reached the one vertebra used. A few of the hybrids of The Existance are a result of the earlier sort of operation. These people disappeared for a while, whether they were on the ship for a long time or somewhere else, such as a body of water. As soon as they were ready to change, they were allowed back, and shed to become true hybrids.

Several members of The Existance feel that the operation would be worthwhile; in fact, there are some who have done it. Quite a few, however, are struggling with a decision. Many feel that it isn't right, or that they simply shouldn't trust the aliens. A few of the hybrids have joined with the aliens completely; they work for them directly, on their bases, crafts, etceteras.

And so they begin. The goal is to infiltrate the government, to blow open everything that they have ever hidden. That's the only goal for both sides, right? Because both sides are going to work together, right?

So they say.

We'll see.
