Maxtor External Drive Merges Backup, File Sharing, and Media Streaming
Automatically Puts File Types into Correct Folders

Next month, Maxtor Corp. will ship 200GB, 300GB, and 500GB versions of a network storage drive that provides data management and security for up to 20 users -- and lets them enjoy a few tunes during backup. The Shared Storage Plus drive acts as a home network's digital entertainment media server, offering multiple, simultaneous streams of music, movies, video, and slide shows via compatible Universal Plug and Play adapters to PCs, stereo systems, and home theater setups on the network.

Maxtor's software suite offers an easy-to-use interface for designating full or limited access to shared folders, scheduling backups, and restoring files. A Drag and Sort feature automatically identifies more than 100 Windows file types and puts them in the proper music, photo, document, or other folders. Connected to the network router via a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port, each Shared Storage Plus includes two USB ports to share printers or additional external drives. Prices are $300 (200GB), $400 (300GB), and $500 (500GB).
