| Spiral Cellular Automata: After reading Stephen Wolfram's book, A New Kind of Science, I decided to experiment with cellular automata. The rule for this image was based one that had a simple nested structure as it appeared in the book, but I thought it would be fun to see what happened if the cells were arranged in a spiral pattern where the new cell colors were based on the nearest inside neighbors, instead of the typical top-down pyramid shape, where the cells are controlled by the cells directly above. The resulting image has lost all of its apparent order, and even out past the millionth cell in the sequence there is still no obvious repetition to the image. The image only shows the first 10,000 or so cells, but I think it is more interesting to look at then some of the larger images. |
