| Irregular Polygons: This image was inspired by an article that I read in Popular Science. It was about the geological formation on the North shore of Ireland called the Giant's Causeway. It consists of basalt columns that were formed by the cooling of a massive lava flow millions of years ago. As the lava shrank and cracked, it did so in a fairly regular manner leaving behind rock columns that look an awful lot like intentionally placed stepping stones that go out into the sea. The article continues to explain how a couple of researchers were able to simulate on a computer the cracking of the rock to show why natural forces could result in organized polygonal columns. I thought it would be fun to try to do something similar by creating an image consisting of equal size, but randomly oriented polygons. I really like the way that the organization of the polygons transitions from hex shaped honeycomb to other areas that almost look like regular square grids. I expected starting out that I would end up with something that was strictly a close packed hex arrangement throughout. |
