Madras University March 1959
Graduated in the First Class with Honours
Post-Graduate training (Training School)
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Aug 1959 - Jul 1960
Extensive training in theory and practical aspects of Nuclear Reactor
Engineering, Power Plant Engineering, Electronics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics,
Fluid Mechanics, Advanced Mathematics, Atomic Physics, Health Physics,
Nuclear and Radiation Monitoring
Employed with the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India,
in various capacities until retirement in June 1998.
November 1997 to June 1998
Worked as Technical Advisor, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research
(IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India, on security and physical
protection matters. IGCAR being a high security area has been provided
with advanced electronic security systems such as Access Control Systems,
Intrusion Monitoring Systems, CCTV etc.
September 1985 to November 1997
Worked on the design of a 500 MW(e) Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor,
a purely indigenous effort. As Head, Power Plant & Controls Division,
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu,
India, headed a team of over 40 engineers responsible for the design
of electrical, instrumentation & control, turbine, steam, and water
systems, plant layout and auxiliaries. A detailed project report was prepared
and submitted to the Government of India.
Other projects handled include the design and engineering of electrical,
instrumentation and control systems of In-Sodium Test Facility, Boron Enrichment
Plant, Bio-fouling Test Loop Facility, Liquid Sodium Heated Steam Generator
Test Facility and Quality Assurance Support for the site installation of
Instrumentation and Control Systems of Kalpakkam Reprocessing Plant.
October 1973 to September 1985
As Project Engineer (Electrical) headed a team responsible
for the project engineering, procurement, site installation, testing and
commissioning of electrical power, instrumentation and control systems
of India’s first fast reactor, the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR)
constructed at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR),
Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India. FBTR is a 50 MW (Th) and 16 MW(e) fast
reactor power plant built in collaboration with the French Atomic Energy
Commission. The plant consists of a sodium cooled fast breeder reactor,
a sodium to water steam generator, and a turbo-generator of 16.4 MW(e)
rating and feeds power to the state grid. The electrical system consists
of a 19 MVA, 6.6 KV alternator, 350 MVA, 6.6 KV switchgear, 415 V switchgear
and motor control centres, 1000 KVA auto-start emergency diesel generator
sets, Ward Leonard pump drive systems, uninterruptible thyristor controlled
instrumentation and control power supplies, various HV and MV motors, transformers,
sodium pipe line heating systems, lighting, power receptacle cabling and
communication systems. The instrumentation and control systems consist
of a central control room from where the entire plant can be started, run
upto full power, continuously monitored during operation and safely shut
down under normal and emergency conditions both manually and automatically,
and of an on-line Central Data Processing System. There are two computers
to continuously monitor the reactor coolant channel temperatures and other
important parameters of the plant. The control system includes nuclear
instrumentation, safety and radiation monitoring systems using integrated
circuits, and other electronic and process instrumentation normally used
in all nuclear power plants. Handled the design, procurement, inspection,
testing and commissioning of all these electrical, instrumentation and
control systems.
November 1968 to October 1973
As Senior Design Engineer (Control & Instrumentation)
heading a team of engineers, carried out the complete design of electrical,
instrumentation and control systems of Fast Breeder Test Reactor at
Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India.
June 1969 to September 1970
Deputed by the Government of India to the Nuclear Research Centre,
Cadarache, France. During this period, prepared the preliminary design
for the electrical, instrumentation and control systems of Fast Breeder
Test Reactor.
March 1967 to November 1968
Worked as Field Engineer and Inspection Engineer at
the 470 MW(e) Rajasthan Atomic Power Project, Government of India,
at Kota, Rajasthan, India. Supervised the site installation of electrical
systems and assisted in solving site problems. This is a pressurised heavy
water reactor of Canadian design.
August 1960 to March 1967
As a Design Engineer, worked on the design of electrical, instrumentation
and control systems of 400 MW(e) Tarapur Atomic Power Project, Government
of India, at Tarapur, Maharashtra, India. Supervised the site installation
of these systems at the project site. This is a boiling water reactor of
American design.
October 1964 to September 1965
Deputed by the Government of India to General Electric Company’s
Atomic Power Equipment Department, San Jose, California, USA, to review
the design of electrical, instrumentation and control systems of Tarapur
Atomic Power Project. Reviewed all the design drawings of electrical and
instrumentation systems for adequacy and to make improvements in the design
where necessary.
