| After deciding that she couldnt hide out in the bathroom forever, Sue checked her appearance in the mirror one more time and frowned. She had tied her hair in a messy knot with clips holding her bangs away from her face much earlier in the day to keep the blonde locks out of her eyes. She had shed her suit jacket almost immediately and she had rolled up the sleeves of her white silk shirt past her elbows. Her tailored slacks were wrinkled and her ID badge that gave her clearance to be in the building and access to the files she needed to do her job was hanging around her neck on a synthetically-made lanyard that had begun to give her a rash where it touched her skin. Her eyes were red from staring at a computer screen that was much smaller than what she was used to back at the Hoover Building and she looked like she hadnt slept in weeks.
The truth was that she hadnt been sleeping well since coming to Quantico. Guns were fired at all hours and, even though she couldnt hear the shots, Levi could and they were driving him crazy. Every few minutes he would get up, turn in a few circles, scratch at the carpet or the bedding, and then lay down again, as if that would make the annoying sounds go away. Plus the case that she was working on was giving her nightmares so even if she did get to sleep it wasnt restful. Normally she would talk her nightmares out with Lucy or, when they got really bad, the Hoover Buildings resident psychiatrist, and things would work themselves out, either because the case got wrapped up or she managed to exorcise any demons that were lurking in her subconscious. But the only person she knew on the base beyond what shed gleamed from the past few days was Myles and, even though they were spending a lot of time together both on and off duty, Sue still didnt feel like she could turn to him with her problems. She had thought about calling Lucy but she really didnt want to be psychoanalysed over the phone so, other than confessing her fears to Levi, Sue was left to stew over her night time visions all by her lonesome. Since it was such a long drive she, Myles, and Levi had taken up residence in the secured quarters that were set aside for visiting agents, witnesses who were at risk before testifying, and, occasionally, a prisoner that needed to wait for transfer. Their rooms were next to each other and they had taken to running together in the mornings and dining together in the Boardroom in the evenings or, if they were feeling like getting away from Quantico for a few hours, they would hop in a car and drive to one of the many restaurants that were within a few miles of the base. Levi had been a huge hit at the Globe and Laurel, a restaurant a mile away from Quantico that was a favourite among FBI and Marines alike, and the chef had even made up a chopped hamburger and gravy meal for the golden retriever after hearing that the famous Levi the Wonderdog was eating with his owner and a friend. |
